Wedge Head Weights... Gap, Sand & Lob

FirePro

Recommended Posts

hello everyone, I am curious to hear what the OEM's are currently putting out for wedge head weight for gap sand and lob more specifically 52/56 & 60 degree wedges. I am more or less trying to find a starting point for grinding some raw forged wedge blanks down.

Worth bearing in mind what lengths you want them to play. If you want them the same length I would say maybe keep them all at the same weight. If that's the case, I would think around 295g. In the video with Mike Taylor talking about where Artisan's forgings come from, he mentions his target weight is 305. I *think* he's talking about a club that could play anywhere from 56-60, but couldn't be certain.

I guess Vokey will be approx industry 'standard' as they are one of the most mainstream brands.

Well, looking at the stock shaft and stock swing weight and stock length is going to be more telling about any relationship to any "standard". That is, assuming those heads you weighed came out of the factory for the stock values.

All standard retail with off the shelf shafts and grips having been cleaned out and immediately prior to rebuilding.

I have Scratch DW 53 and 58 too, along with TM Tour Department Raw Milled Grinds which are somewhat in the same weight range, but they aren't 'mainstream' and probably aren't good benchmarks.

I will most likely be keeping to a standard OEM type lengths but I will be going away from DG and most likely match my KBS $-Taper shafts that I have in my irons which are a tad counter balanced so I am thinking I may need to have a slightly heavier head to get my desired SW which I am currently looking into how to find out what I like most for each of the 52, 56 and 60 degree lofts.

Hear is my thoughts of how to find out what I like.

take my old heads and plug them into the shafts I want to use with the new wedges but not tip weighting them at all and start hitting balls and adding lead tap until I reach the feel I like. remove the old heads with the lead tap still in tact and weigh each of them and I would have my target weight for each.

is there a better system then this, I feel like this project is going to take me quite some time ha

Sounds perfect to me. Do it.

I agree the 60 will only be used for short sided chips, pitches and flops. I couldn't help myself I had to start shaping the wedges, I left the 60 a little heavy until I figure out the end weight I want for each.

not sure if you can tell I love my Z745's so why not mimic the look. still a little more cleaning up of the wedge but were almost there
