My 'Aha' Moment...pushing off the right foot start downswing

Recommended Posts

Ok so ive come to what i think is a swing key for me that works really well, i suffer from an ott move and problems hanging back, i play off 13. i my bad shot is a snap hook and my fall flight is straight/fade.

ive always played with my grip, bowing wrists, bowing, cupping, pulling the chain, push into left heel, pull club left & low etc, nothing works to get a consistent strike.

then i started playing with a Greg Norman swing thought of insteaf of the feeling of rotating, just push the right hip back, and push off the right foot and allow the coil to spring you through impact.

what ivr found is if i concentrate on pushing the the right hip back, my arms and shoulders turn on the take away without any feeling of lifting the club, my wrists feel no over hinge, infact i feel like theres little or no hinge(even though there is) and the swing feels much tighter and shorter and much more coil.

ive noticed the day after playing like this my right glutes were very tender and sore.

to start the downswing by simply pushing upwards through my feet, and every shot was straight, and dispersion was incredible, i lost about 5 yards on distance, which i can deal with as i hit my 7i 170 anyway, but i dont have to worry about wrist set, pulling the club down or spinning out, just push off with the feet and the club comes down on its own

again this is just a feel up pushing my hip back, im sure i am rotating, but has anyone else used this analogy before?

Pushing hard off the right foot worked well for Gabriel Hjertstedt.

Yesterday, Kostis did a swing review of Justin Thomas. He pushes hard off the rear leg to get "vertical".

I am toying with this thought as well. Might start applying big toe pressure(trail foot) pre-swing to get a good start to the transfer.

When I swing hard, my upper body adjusts accordingly but the lower half moves as normal(too slow). Firing correctly with the lower body at all speeds is crucial. I've always struggled getting my hips through impact anyway, cannot hurt to get a little help from the back foot!

  • 5 years later...

Reading this makes me realize how different drills, swing thoughts, feels, etc don’t work or even hinder and for others like the OP said, it can be their “ah ha” moment. For myself, the exact opposite is true and almost eliminating the back foot (I’m a lefty, so my left side) was my “ah-ha” moment. I pulled my left calf muscle pretty badly, and instead of resting it like a responsible adult, I decided that it was no excuse to miss my Sunday morning foursome. The night before I was on instagram and saw a video by Ernie Els where he talks about instead of trying to rotate, he likes to just feel like his left butt cheek, (for me, my right) is going straight backwards to start his transition from the top. That Sunday, with zero strength in my left/back foot, and no way of bearing weight anywhere near my left toes, I played my best round in 10 years and shot 77. So for me, all initiation of the down swing starts on my front side, and it gets me to feel like I’m pulling the swing from the inside rather than pushing off my back side. (In the past, that push would lead to bouts with the dreaded unmentionables). Now mind you, I’m 46 now with multiple knee surgeries, wrist surgery and tendinitis in my left elbow, so power and distance isn’t my game anymore. I’m not “short” by any means, 240-260 off the tee and can ramp it to 270+ when I step on it, but certainly not as fast as I was in my 20’s and 30’s. So for anyone who has had issues engaging their back side in the swing, it might be worth it to try feeling like your front side is your engine with that back pocket on your lead side going straight backwards to get that turn through the ball.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
