Laserlink vs other rangefinders

Anybody ever use a laserlink? As I understand it, it reads a reflector on the flagstick -- and ONLY the reflector. So, you never get a mis-reading from a tree, etc. On the other hand, you can't get any distance other than distance to flag. My question -- is it substantially easier to get a read on the flag with a laserlink than with other rangefinders (for example bushnell 1500 or nikon 1200)?

I have used both, but I carry the new bushnell with slope, my regular playing partner carries the laserlink. The Laserlink is ok and inexpensive, gives fine readings when you can get the reflector, but sometimes it just won't find it. Could be the flag flapping, bad angle, or reflector missing, etc. Both devices shot side by side, read to within a yard or two. I would say on an avererage, two out of eighteen flags a round are difficult to get reads on, but a worthwile product if you always play courses with reflectors, and your practice areas use flags with reflectors.

 

The busnell reads flags well with the enhanced mode, with is designed to eliminate background and foreground errors, but occasionally gives errors. It's real value is the ability to read distances to bunkers, trees, rocks, players on the green or the fairway, driving range objects, whatever. Whatever mis-reads one may get on flags, the other benefits overcome it. I shoot the flag twice quickly to confirm flag distances and rarely get a bad/no reading. Some users of the bushnells have complained about foggy optics and focus and have switched to the new callaway finders. Mine has been good, ocasionally fogs up in humidity, but the readings are crisp, just the binocular part is out of focus. The bushnell I have takes 9V batteries and they last about a month/8 rounds.

I have not used the laserlink, but I find any rangefinder with closest priority and scan mode to be pretty easy to range a pin on. Just line it up on the flag, put it in scan mode and work it back and forth, to the left and right of the pin. Your lowest number is gonna be the distance to the pin. Only takes a few seconds.

My home course is equipped with the LaserLink reflectors atop the flags. I agree that the LaserLink is a little limited in its versatility. I didn't have much of an issue with getting readings with the Laserlink gun, but hazards, sand traps, etc are of equal or greater importance anyway. I have a Bushnell 1500 and it picks up the reflectors really easily. I have never had any issue with getting a reading to any flag with it. But, the LaserLink reflectors make it really easy. So much so that you generally just have to get it in the general area of the flag to get a reading. 1500 is definitely the way to go if contemplating between the two.

Laser Link GOLD RUUUUUUUUUULES!

 

You don't need the reflectors for this model and you can point it at ANYTHING and it will give you a distance. It is a little difficult to operate if you don't have a semi-steady hand though.

Laser link gold is really good because you can point it to a flag stick and if you dont want to or the course doesnt have a crystal in the flag you can point it to the flag or you can point it to anything and I think it is much easier to use than the bushnells or sky caddie but thats just my opinion

Has anyone had more experience with the Laser Link Gold? I used one yesterday and it was incredibly easy to use. I haven't tried the Bushnells so not sure how they compare.

 

Would be great to hear from more folks who have tried the Laser Link Gold and Bushnells. :)
