Public Golf in Akron, Ohio area

So I recently moved from NW Ohio to the Akron area. Looking for a new home course in the area. Not really in a position to join a private club, but have always been a “member” of a public course in the past and played events, leagues, etc. I love to walk with a cart, play to about a 12 HCP and am looking for a new home. Have played several of the courses in this area with my father-in-law, but he passed away awhile back (which is part of the reason for moving out this way). Now I’m on my own and looking to find a place to get involved. Anybody have any suggestions for a place that has a good skins game, events, etc. for somebody at my HCP? Windmill Lakes in Ravenna had a super deal for 2 years of open golf Which I signed up for, but not sure if that’s going to be home. Any suggestions would be great!

Neither is in Akron but close enough that you need to play Boulder Creek in Streetsboro and the Quarry in Akron.

I’m sure others will chime in. If you join club Corp you can play Firestone. I have a buddy that was an out of town member until last year. He just couldn’t use it enough once he relocated to Columbus. Too bad. I really enjoyed a Firestone 3 or 4 times a season.

Fox Den in Stow has a skins game every Wednesday that runs with their scratch league. This one is pretty competitive

Raccoon Hill in Kent does a Friday skins game. This one is more "friendly" and golfers from various skill levels participate. This was my home course as a kid. Too many memories. The atmosphere here is pretty laid back. Good people

Courses to visit:

Ellsworth Meadows in Hudson - A personal favorite. Good conditions, a bit wet a times though

Chippewa in Doylestown - This is an amazingly fun course that I've never played the same round twice. Amazing greens!!!

Boulder Creek in Streetsboro - Probably the closest to a "resort course" in the area. Pricey but worth the experience. Great opportunity for photos

The Quarry in Canton (Haven't played myself)

Brookledge in Cuyahoga Falls is a muni that is always in great condition. Haven't played in a few years though

Turkeyfoot in Akron is a fun course to play and not overly long

Good Park in Akron is the city run track that hosts the Summit County Am. Great green conditions

If you're into history, the Clearview Golf Club in Canton is an interesting track. First course in the United States to be designed and owned by African-Americans. The course also has some interesting features, including a few holes with multiple greens.

Srixon Z-Star or Q-Star tour depending on conditions

Interesting you brought up Clearview, I worked there mowing fairways and rough as a college student while I was at Malone. Got to know the Powell family quite well during my time there. After graduation, I moved out of the area and when William passed away I actually heard the news on Sportscenter which tells you the impact he had on the game. When I worked there he was in his late 80’s and trained me on mowing by having me ride along as he drove the tractor and showed me how to take care of each hole. Neat experience getting to know the family and really sparked my obsession with the game of golf even though I started playing the game as a young kid many years earlier.

I guess where in the Akron area are you? I am in Hudson, and lately have discovered the Hinckley courses. Pine Hills and Ironwood are both pretty good courses in pretty good shape, and Ironwood in particular has some good specials from time to time (10 dollar 9's and 20 for 18). Besides that, I also got the deal from Windmill, its just the times and 30 minutes of driving east do not always work. Around here, the Kent closures took some places I used to enjoy. They weren't Windmill quality, but I liked Oak Knolls and always had fun at Kent State too.

For anybody interested, a bunch of WRXers are having a little outing on Saturday September 14th at either the Quarry or Hawk's Nest or a course yet to be determined. There is a thread in the regional. Pop in and get on it if you are interested. It will be a good time and a chance to meet guys from all over the state. We played down in Columbus in May and it was a good group.

@hoffa72002

Are you looking for just a course to call home or are you looking for the course with the best practice facilities as well as course? Honestly since Tammy shut down this year legends in massillon has the best complete offerings as far as practice facilities and a decent course.. They have 3 9's to keep things changing up for you a large putting green good driving range and full chipping/pitching area complete with bunkers around the chipping pitching green.

Is the legends the best course in the area definitely not is it the worst? Hell no its not.. There are better courses to play but I firmly believe that they have the best most complete offerings when it comes to working on your game.
