TM Ghost Spider SI Refinsh (fianlly pictures)

So I’m in the middle stages of refinishing a Spider SI I had laying around. I have a Scotty that doesn’t come out of my bag now so I figured I could tinker around. It was really difficult to take the paint off however I was wondering if anyone else has done a refinish on one of these types? I got a new insert from SpryEvo (which looks awesome went with the copper for weight and look).

 

Just wanted some feedback on what you’ve done. If you’ve done it.

Most times that TM ghost finish is a polymer and needs to be bead blasted off.

So I got the finish off, sanded it down and tried torching it however between the face and the back piece on the sole some adhesive type stuff started bubbling out. Not sure if it’s two pieces held together with glue or what but it smelled awful when it was burning/on fire. Luckily I was doing it at work and had plenty of fire extinguishers nearby (didn’t need them). Wondering if anyone know anything about this.

As you have already figured out, you cant torch with the insert or backing plate.  Insert has to be removed.

Yeah. Took the insert out. The middle of it (for lack of a better word) where the alignment line is seems to be aluminum so it didn’t take the torching. The rest did and looks not awful. Not my best project but it still came out ok. I’ll post pictures Sunday when I’m back to work which is where it’s at

Finally got it almost finished. The middle part is aluminum and I’m getting my father in law who does metal refinishing to give me some stuff to blacken the metal but minus that and some paint fill it’s oretty much complete. Big thanks to @spryevo for the copper insert. Gave some weight to the head and a nice look.

 

The whole head needs some more love but for the most part it’s finished. Just something to mess around with. Far from perfect.

Looks really good Matt, great work!

Rustoleum makes a great "aircraft stripper" that removes coatings. Then blasting the metal can take away any marks.
