Hybrid or GI long Irons?

I've been gaming a 3 hybrid for the past several seasons and have been toying with going to a game improvement 3i since I hit long irons marginally better than I hit my hybrids. Is anyone gaming a GI long iron instead of a hybrid and having better success with long approaches?

I recently changed from a M3 hybrid to the srixon U85 (same loft). The srixon is tagged as a utility iron, but it is really a GI iron, and I love the change. The feel is better, the ball speed the same, and the look at address is far superior. Strangely I hit the iron better than the hybrid in rough as well, which is opposite of what we are told.

I think you're kind of answering your own question... If you're hitting your long irons a little better than your hybrid, why don't you game a 3i in the same model as your current irons? I think that a lot of people think they can't hit a regular 3i so they go with a GI and have really mixed results with them.

It's not an issue with being able to hit a 3i. I grew up hitting a Tommy Armour 1i off the tee for a long time. LOL. I guess the original post should have stated that I was wanting to see if anyone is getting a GI long iron to fly high and sit soft using a graphite shaft.

 

Theboyslater - I recently bagged the Srixon z785s and so the u85 might be the way to go. I currently have a p790 UDI in the bag and love hitting it from everywhere, but the flight is such a low bullet so it won't hold the green no matter how high it goes.

 

I know i might be looking for a Holy Grail here, so I might not be able to find what I am looking for in an iron.
