Vintage Golf Bag Replacement Strap

Recommended Posts

So I bought my first vintage bag off eBay and it arrived in lovely shape except for the strap which is petrified and needs to be replaced. The bag is a 1960’s vinyl bag and I’m wondering if any of you guys have found a good source of replacements. Is there anyone that sells bag parts? As I said it’s a lovely bag and I don’t have too much into it but I really don’t want to buy another bag with a good navy vinyl strap just to add to this bag.

Or, any of you gents have any spare bag parts lying about?

Thoughts?

Jones sells individual straps but I only see black or white on their website, it might be worth a call to them to see if they have others available. $15 is a good price and the new strap will be way more comfortable than the vintage offerings. https://www.jonessportsco.com/collections/carry-bags/products/copy-of-original-jones-black-vinyl-shoulder-strap

Thanks for the heads up. I found a vintage one that should work but if not I may contact Jones about a custom navy one.

Like it DJ I was going to suggest Jones but wanted to see what the bag looked like first. Are you going to carry that bag or put it on a cart? It looks well built and heavy to carry

Well, it will go on my cart to drive to the range, on a push cart for 18 hole rounds and just carried when I play the 4-hole loop behind my house. I learned long ago from my Grandfather to throw a sheepskin cover on the strap if it is uncomfortable so that is an option. The bag isn’t too heavy, just a hair over 7 lbs, my current bag is 8.5lbs so it is actually lighter than my current set up. This bag caught my eye as it is more streamlined with less bulk and pockets than the bags that came along in the 70’s and 80’s.

When I played with James the Hogan Fan a few weeks ago he brought his classic bag and it added to the whole classic round vibe. For me it’s kind of like the guy that owns a classic car and also decorates his garage to look like a vintage service station. The secondary items enhance the whole experience.

I stuck the 58 Dyna’s in the new vintage bag and they just look like they belong there.

yep I agree the secondary things add to the whole experience---- Put the FCs in the bag I told you about the other day and they look right at home as do the Machogans in the Jones bag. I am always scrounging for vintage bags. You gotta post a shot of the 58s in that bag. The KZGs look good in the vintage Burton staff I got the other day too. I can remember back in the day they sold a sheepskin strap sleeve to go on those straps. My old man sold quite a few of them. I always had one in fact my last one is on my old white Ping Staff bag. If you can not find or make one the auto parts stores sell a seat belt strap pad that works fine. I turned one of out members Kathy Marie on to that one some time back. Far as weight I pack light anyhow only carry about 6 balls or so. Even the leather Burton Staff according to the cart guys is lighter than those new fangled cart bags. On the push cart thing I even have a vintage Bag Boy pull cart from the 60s 70s that is pristine with the aluminum score card holder with a slot for 4 balls 6 tees and a pack of smokes. Yep I am all about vintage

I’ll try to grab some pics tonight when the light is better with my nice camera. I’ve got one of those sheepskin strap covers somewhere but it just be easier to buy a new one if needed. I just like old stuff. I mean while many guys daydream about new Porsche’s or BMW’s or the like, I’m looking at 1975-85 Mercedes 300 diesels, that’s just my style.

Love it man the bag is not as big as I imagined and does not look as heavy either. Yep you got the look there of a 60s/70s player. On covers I would suggest if you can find some that match the old School slip on leather covers like Wilson had in the 70s etc. That was what I sometimes used back in the day when I used a cover. In the late 70s I got into the huge pom pom covers like Nicklaus and Watson used. Now I have an orange Burton built Power Bilt bag that same size and that thing is heavy-- In fact it is heavier than the Burton Mini staff I picked up a few weeks ago. I think it was designed as a carry bag because it has limited pockets but it is heavy. I used it for a while as a cart bag but then moved into that Jones I bought. That Voit canvas and nylon I bought the other day is even lighter than my Sunday bag. In fact will probably use it as a walking bag this fall

Yeah, I’m looking for the leather-look vinyl headcovers for this bag. I’ve got the knit Pom-Pom’s on my “modern” persimmon’s, the Cleveland TC-15’s. I have a strap on the way from Teevons that should work well. The bag is in great shape, just the strap was petrified and it was pretty narrow anyway so a new strap will help. Like I said, just wanted a period correct bag just for fun.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
