My new old bag

My uncle and a good friend of mine just read the post about modern equipment wrecking the golf swing so they decided to throw some older gear in the bag. We took a look at the Traditional Rules Golf website to get some ideas and moved from there. Best part is, my buddy didn’t have any qualifying clubs so he had to eBay them. I think he’s in them just over $100. Mine are a mixed bag. I bought the Apex IIs like a year ago. I had been watching them on eBay for years and finally found a cheap enough set that my wife wouldn’t care about. It was missing the 8 iron but I managed to find one with similar specs for $30. It’s only one digit different on the serial number so I’m sure it’s really close in specs. My dad, who has zero interest in older clubs found the Zing Blonde Maples at an estate sale. He knew I like the Blonde finish so he bought them and gave them to me for my birthday. They came with some Orange dot Zings that have become my favorite irons. But the cavity is too big for one of these crazy rounds. The driver is an old Hogan that I think I paid $5 for many years ago. It’s done okay the few times I’ve played it. No idea when I will get out to play, but it’s sure been fun putting the bag together.

Love it so the classic golf bug has bitten again---- Love the Cameos IMHO one of the finest irons the real Hogan company produced. Also if you would give us some "intel" on the wedges and putter. I know one appears to be some sort of Ping and the other a Bulls Eye and the wedge appears to be some kind of Wilson.

The wedges are up in the air. There’s a Hogan Special Grind that looks like an early Sure Out and a Wilson R20. I may carry both just for the fact that the R20 has a narrowe sole than the Hogan. As for the putters. There are two Bullseyes, one huge and one normal. There is also a Snake Eyes Viper Tour 8802 style. I know it’s modern, but it’s as much of a blade that exists. I may end up rolling my old Stainless Anser 2 as well.

The old Hogan Sure out wedges will get you out of any kind of sand I have found. But for me that is where the usefulness ends. I have a couple in my stash. I agree with NYJzr on the Snake Eyes 8802 style. That is one heck of a putter I had one and sold it wish sometimes I hadn't. The Wilson R-20 is a good utility type wedge. Back in the day I was a big R-90 fan and had one I wore slap out. Went through several after that and none had the feel of mine no matter how I tried to fix it

I played a Sure Out from 69 till 72. In 72 I started using a Hogan Special Sand Iron. On the back it has Ben Hogan script and the Sunburst along with the word SPECIAL. On the soul it has SAND IRON. It was a really nice club. I still have it and take it out sometimes. Worked well for me from sand and fairway. I also played a R-20 for awhile too. Your Apex irons are some of the best Hogan ever made.
