I've never played lacrosse, but there is lacrosse for 5-year olds?

They don’t have lacrosse leagues for kids his age but they have little stick and nets. We have those and we will throw it around in the back yard

Check out the Instagram account for James Jordan Golf, he is based out of California but is phenomenal with young kids.

Probably too far, but he responds to messages and will point you in the right direction.

I think you should ignore naysayers and support your son as much as you can. If you don't, who will?

Help him become the best he can in terms of skill/ability while at the same time fostering a true love for the sport.

Just have proper expectations: assume best case is he's good enough to choose what college he wants to go to - no scholarship $, and no pro touring career.

Sounds good. If you watched the Titleist Peformance Institute (TPI) presentation that I linked the other day, there is one key phrase to remember for golf: "Build the athlete first". Other comments here about keeping it fun and building the love for the game are also very good advice.

I help coach my son’s 8U lacrosse team. 8U is the lowest recognized level by US Lacrosse. We allow kids as young as 5 to come out and play. Most of it is just learning to throw, catch and scoop ground balls. For most kids in that age group, it’s very challenging but like every other sport, there are those kids that pick it up quickly. We only let the more experienced kids wear helmets and pads. There is no cooler or cuter kids’ sport to watch and it clearly helps hand eye coordination. Here’s my son from his first game in pads in January.

Excellent advice. While a few (short lessons) probably can't harm, you have to be really careful not to overdo it too soon - even if it is your kids asking to play all the time. Play other sports, get him into USKids or PGA team tournaments and above all else try not to set any expectations or react adversely to outcomes. Trust the folks on the forum, many have been through this and seen "prodigy's" battle with the game or lose interest as they grow etc. For what it is worth, our older junior started lessons at age 6 and did benefit from them (once a week, private with a master PGA professional who really didn't do any "swing work", focused on basics, grip, set up, and lots of short game). He's now in high school, still loves golf (plays to scratch) but had a few years where he definitely lost some motivation. For parents of young enthusiastic golfers, Rick Heard's book "Daddy Caddy on the Bag" is a good read as is Henry Brunton's "Journey to Excellence".
