Q and A thread

Well, JHR's new Gauge Design irons and several other sets have got me thinking... why don't more iron sets come in a gunmetal finish?! I have a couple of questions that I am hoping can be answered. I have seen a couple sets of CG1 irons on ebay in a black pearl finish. Does anyone know if that is a tour only thing or is that coming to retail? Also, how much does it cost to have a set of irons refinished in a flat black finish? Also, does that sort of refinishing have any negative effects on playability? i.e. swingweight, spin... that kind of stuff. Has anybody had their irons refinished? Before and after pics would be awesome. If you're not comfortable sharing prices on the thread, please PM me, because it's something I'm pretty interested in and it's tough to find pricing information. Thanks everyone!

I am not an expert but you will probably lose a lot of weight in the head. Removing all the chrome and just putting a temporary finish will probably require you to add some sort of weights to get your swingweight back to where it was.

with regards to the cg 1's, i think they are a tour only thing and probably aren't coming to retail for a while if ever.

You can send your heads to BlackOxideService.com. I thought VJ's were a black melonite finish. Mizuno will do a custom BO but everyone says one hit and its gone. There isn't a durable finish I've seen yet. I am not sure if BO can bring the swing weights back up, with a nickel or copper layer, before BOing them.

Per a Cleveland Tour Van guy I know, if there are any CG-1s in the black pearl finish on e-Bay they are being done by an aftermarket finisher (many can do it and a better job than Cleveland's most of the time). The only black gunmetal finished CG-1s are in VJ and Quas's bags (2 sets total made to date). And they are CG-1s in design only. Neither is made of the CMM material but rather the 8620 carbon steel that the TA-1s were made from which also allows a deeper darker finish compared to the CMM material. Right from the horse's mouth who built them.

I've got the CG1's and looking to refinish them in black oxide. I hear its some maintenance to keep them up but like to keep mine clean anyways. Any thought on doing them myself vs paying someone? Looking to cost well over $500 to pay someone. Doesn't seem too hard. I can pull shafts a d reshaft but the rest is new to me!
