When do YOU begin the rotation of your hips?

In my never ending quest to get distance, I have been just experimenting. I am starting to realize that I am not completely rotating on my backswing (it's something like 80%) so my distances are not as long as the enthusiasts here. I was watching myself in the mirror and comparing how the 'pros' swing. Anyways, I am going to experiment with rotating more.

 

However, as I was rotating to the top of the backswing, I came to the realization that there was a feeling of more 'potential energy' or tension in my body if I can start rotating BEFORE I complete the backswing. It seems like there is some potential to generate some serious clubhead speed. However, the pitfall will be the timing - which may not help the recreational golfer.

Jeff Mann has a great set of Video's on You Tube now and the links are related to Over the Top moves but really gives a good insight to what the hips do in the golf swing. I have sent all the links to my student and they have really got some great info there.

I didn't watch any of the other video as I have a tendency to close windows featuring men in spandex, but I like to feel my left knee flex forward (over my big toe) on my back swing & I post onto my left leg (straighten out my left leg) once I have have enough weight on my left side. I suppose the amount of lateral motion you have in your swing would determine when you need to activate your lower body. The more weight you move on your back swing, the more weight you have to move forward on the down swing. Since the hips don't have far to go in relation to the club, arms & shoulders, I have to let my lower body stay passive until the last possible moment. Any earlier and my hips spin out, the club gets stuck & I hit it high right.
