lifting of the arm after "halfway back"?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

assuming one is in a okayish or good 9 o clock position, is there still lifting of the left and right arm or is it just turning?

I heard Monte say that you basically simply turn from there to complete the backswing.

It was my understanding that too much lift leads to a flying right elbow?

However, in my case ,lifting the arms leads to a better backswing. I get a bit into overturning with my shoulders when I only turn from the halfway back position.

Best Regards

Depends how you define "lifting the arm". In my swing model, the arms do indeed "go up" independent of the Pivot bringing them up (which is about half of the total measured distance). Arms go up from right elbow folding vertically, which mainly lifts the left arm up since the two arms are connected through the grip to the handle of the club. There should be no "lifting up of the arms" from the muscles that surround the upper arm joint. From P3 or left arm parallel, there is very little independent arm motion upwards in most pro swings, or even none with the guys and gals with fairly short, compact, flattish backswings. Meaning right elbow folding is mostly done by P3.

Thanks, guys. Jim, that is the feeling I have. Not lifting ,so to speak, after P3 makes my backswing rather short. Maybe a bit over 3/4. I do not know if it is actually possible to get it to parallel or past parallel even with top flexibility if one omits any arm action.

( I know that most people are probably better of with shorter swings. However ,simply turning after P3, feels so unathletic)

What ams do to screw up their swing cause they have to get to parallel. An insynch swing with about 90* turn no matter where the shaft results is way better than arms that lift.

You are right, It is not even that I am obsessed with the shaft being parallel. I am mostly wondering if one can turn only after P3 ( from a physical standpoint) and reach parallel or even past that. I am not John Daly in terms of giftedness but I think there is something I am missing. And I am rather flexible for an amateur.

Besides, the teachers I had in my teens were horrible. Actually made me quit golf at 15/16. One actually pushed me and other students to do a lifting motion because he was obsessed with the parallel position on top of backsswing. Of course, the results, were desastrous and hence I quit for some years.

Golf instruction in my country is a desaster.

A another way to understand the arm lift in the back swing is to compare the standard golf swing with the single plane golf swing. With the standard set up and back swing the left arm and hands turn and rotate out/ up to the plane line of the club face to your ball. With the single plane method the hands are moved upward at set up eliminating all or most of the outward/upward rotation in the back swing, needing only the turn going back.
