"Dotless" Apex Pro Dots

Sounds like an oxymoron, but they do exist.

Background info:  I played Apex Pro 2014s for several years, loved them.  In 2019 they were looking a bit worn so I bought some Apex Pro 19s.  Hated them.  Too strong of lofts, cup face fliers, and don't have the buttery soft thunk when you flush one.  So when easyyy started a thread last year about the Pro Dot version, I was intrigued.  Retro lofts, no cup face, buttery smooth feel.  But I waited too long and all the sets sold out.

A few months later, in November 2019, I see several Pro Dot sets listed for sale on Callaway Preowned.  I see a set with 4 thru PW + AW, like new condition, 2 degrees upright, perfect for me, so I ordered and customized with MCC +4 midsize grips.  A few days later and they arrive, open up the box and they are actually brand new, never hit.  I compared them visually to my regular Apex Pro 19s and they were more compact, had a higher toe, thinner topline, straighter leading edge, less cavity, etc.  Beautiful irons.   However they had not "dot" on the hosel, and did not have a TC serial number.  So I called my rep at Callaway Preowned and asked him about this.  He emailed somebody in production who confirmed that my clubs were Pro Dot version and said:

There was no design or quality difference between TC heads and non-TC heads.

PT sourced a couple different versions of TC heads.  This is a customary process for PT.  It’s done to fulfill special build requirements for PT orders.  I’ve listed all the versions below.  MTY used the equivalent of the Wide Groove Standard.

TC Wide Groove Light

TC Wide Groove Standard

TC Wide Groove Heavy

TC Narrow Groove Light

TC Narrow Groove Standard

TC Narrow Groove Heavy

So as soon as I hit them I knew they were the Pro Dot version, completely different feel.  My friend has Pro Dots with the dots on hosels and TC serial number, and the clubheads are identical in looks and feel.  I wonder if anyone else here bought a set of these from Callaway Preowned?  Can't remember how many sets they had but they sold out quickly.  I recently put mine up for sale on Ebay and I am getting a lot of comments saying they aren't Pro Dots etc.   I tell them I have receipts from Callaway, will give them serial and order numbers and they can confirm with Callaway etc.  The dot is not what makes them different from regular apex, it's the head shape, materials used, no cup face etc that matter.

Over here in the UK, i contacted Callaway to try and get a set of the 19's, double dot L heads in raw finish. I asked as the models had now changed could they get a set for me but they did'nt want to know at all. If the pro's are moving to newer sets i can't see any reason to hang onto these but obviously Callaway think different.

Seems a bit like a shill thread to try and sell the set you have on eBay. It’s more likely you got sent a normal set from CPO and they told you they were still dot clubs since you’ve have zero way to prove otherwise.

The demand planning for these sorts of items is VERY well done.

Basically to the point where they know player preferences and build to suit, plus a little extra...

I would expect that they simply have run out of the heads, plus they are VERY tightly controlled, they don’t want people playing them and others to think the quality control of the finish was poor because they were an unplated/raw model for example if the same type of finish was not bought to retail.

Not trying to shill, trying to see if anyone else bought a set of these at Callaway preowned and had trouble selling them.  I already know they are Apex Pro Dots because I compared them to my regular Apex Pro 19s and they are visually different (thinner topline, straighter leading edge, smoother hosel transition, and a higher more rounded toe) When you hit them there is a world of difference. Your assumption that I could not tell the difference between the two is a bit condescending. Image of apex pro dot is my six iron.

I'm not sure your comparison to a composite carries the weight you think it does. The groove count is the same and you seem to think you have the only Pro Dot gap wedge known to man.

I'm not doubting what you believe you have. I just find it much more likely you dont have what you think.

You will only be able to get normal pricing for your set, no matter how many screenshots you post. The person who buys them will have the same issue you do. You can't prove they are dots. You can only prove callaway's emailed receipt says the word dot on it.

Pretty sure all Apex Pro 19 irons had a dot under the number and on the hosel. Only the 'double dot' was the special one?

I ordered 'regular' Apex Pro 19 irons in PW/AW - as individual irons - from CPO back earlier in 2019 and both of them came with dots under the numbers and i didnt think anything of it.

i didnt realize you could get a AW in any of the 'dot' versions? i thought PW was as far as they went, interesting.

sounds like you have an interesting set, good luck with sale.

I have an apex pro AW with a dot under the A - I had no idea it was special?

The dot is on the hosel next to '19. You are confused, they all have dots on the sole near the number

Yep after more research that seems to be the case.

I don 't think you know as much as you think you know.  I've told you I compared this set to my regular Apex Pro 19s.  They are visually different as stated previously.  They have a completely different feel as well.  I don't know if I have the only Dot AW known to man, just that I actually own one.  You are not talking to some dummy here, I've been a member of the PGA for 30 years and these irons do not have a cup face and they have retro lofts.

My rep at Callaway preowned contacted someone in manufacturing and here is what he said.

The simple change of adding TC to the serial numbers requires different head part numbers within Callaway’s sales order system.  This is how PT protects its inventory.  Retail orders would not use these head part numbers.  The result is PT’s supply is reserved only for PT orders.

Retail orders use part numbers without the TC.  Supply of these heads were located only in MTY.

There was no design or quality difference between TC heads and non-TC heads.

PT sourced a couple different versions of TC heads.  This is a customary process for PT.  It’s done to fulfill special build requirements for PT orders.  I’ve listed all the versions below.  MTY used the equivalent of the Wide Groove Standard.

TC Wide Groove Light

TC Wide Groove Standard

TC Wide Groove Heavy

TC Narrow Groove Light

TC Narrow Groove Standard

TC Narrow Groove Heavy

So not all Pro Dots sets have extra grooves, mine are wide groove standard.  It appears they made some "retail" versions of these heads which did not have to dot on hosel nor a TC serial number.  There were only a few sets available at preowned and they were gone in a few days.  Perhaps at one point they thought about offering them to general public, I don't know.  Purpose of this thread is to see if anyone bought one of those sets.

Anyway,  my rep is going to find me written proof from manufacturing that these are same as Dots.  Anyone near Ocala Florida that wants to hit them send me a PM.

I'm going to a golf shop tomorrow that has a set of regular Apex Pro 19s in stock and will take some photos for comparison so you all don't think I'm crazy.  😉
