Completely switched to Hybrids - Hybrid lengths?

I know I probably should be switching to hybrids in my long irons but I'm still really good with them and have no problems hitting them.  The issue is that every hybrid I've tried my misses with them were significantly worse than a long iron.  I've always been a really good iron player, even long irons, and have had trouble switching to hybrids.  But I know the benefits are there if I can find one that I'm as confident with as my 3I.

I think the main issue is that most hybrids are significantly longer and have really light shafts.  I've tried heavier graphite but the heads are still too light to build them shorter.  They seem to be geared towards length vs accuracy.  I think ideal for me would be .5" longer than steel (i.e. 39.5" for a 3Hybrid)

For those that have completely replaced long irons, what comparative lengths and shafts did you end up going with?  If really short how did you handle the light heads?

I play a 3 and 4 hybrid (Adams super 9031 proto) with Modus 105 s shafts hard stepped 1x at 1/2 over standard length for the corresponding iron. My 4 hybrid is at my 3 iron playing length 39 inch, and my 3 hybrid is standard 2 iron length 39.5

The Adams super 9031 hybrids are “on average” same weight as a corresponding irons.

They are the best long iron replacement hybrids I’ve hit, and super cheap even with reshafting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the link to the ones below are the proto, so they are black not white!

@achappy, one choice you're facing deals with the type of hybrid you get:

  • Traditional: shaft length between FWs and numbered irons. Head lofts similar to long irons, sometimes. For the Cobra FlyZ hybrids, the 3H is 40.5" and the 4H is 39.75", more than an inch longer than numbered irons from Cobra.
  • Iron-replacement: these hybrids are made to fit with the iron models a company makes. Very often, the shaft length and loft of the hybrids are almost an exact match for the parallel numbered irons, and are easier to blend in. Mizuno FLI-HI hybrids would be an example.

With a traditional, you have to do testing to determine which hybrids/lofts you need to bridge the distance between fairway woods and longest numbered iron. With iron replacement, you pretty well just swap out the 3i and 4i for the 3H and 4H. (The hybrids will fly a little longer because they launch better.)

As for head weight of the hybrids, a couple of ways to make it heavier. Some models have weight screws or plates that you can swap out for heavier swingweight and feel. Also, you can epoxy a small weight cylinder into the tip of the shaft.

Clubsmiths have fairly standard swingweight adjustment estimates (these are more accurate for long clubs):

  • A 9-gram increase in shaft weight will add +1 to swingweight.
  • A half-inch increase in shaft length will add +3 to swingweight.
  • A 2-gram increase in head weight will add +1 to swingweight.

So, if you cut the shaft by a half inch, you would need to add back 6 grams of head weight to keep the swingweight the same. If you wanted to trim a half inch and overall increase SwWt from D1 to D3, you would add back 10 grams of head weight to get there.

If you don't build your own clubs, it would be best to work with a fitter/clubsmith. They would have ideas on which hybrids might work for you, and how to tweak "almost" hybrids.

Before this season, I did a hybrid loft and length experiment on TrackMan.

heads:

Titleist 816 H2 19*

816 H2 21*

818 H1 23*

I have the Diamana D+ 100 Hybrid shafts in lengths 39.5, 40.0, and 40.5.

I mixed and matched heads to shafts and found that I hit the 21* head with the 40” shaft the best...which happens to be the stock length. To me, 39.5 felt a little short and 40.5 is too long.  I did not mess with adjusting swing weights as I hit so it’s possible that skewed the results.

My though going in was similar to yours...I was hoping the 40.0” in the 19* head would work well.

I am using 3-6 hybrids with the same shafts (project X 6.0 flighted)  as my other irons. So my 4 iron shaft goes to the 4 hybrid, and 5 iron shaft goes to the 5 hybrid. And the hybrids have the same lofts as the corresponding irons.
