Sim2 Max Irons

IMO

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Been a longtime lurker on here but finally need to ask for some input.

I recently brought my M4 irons in to golftown here in Canada to redo the epoxy as some of the heads were moving. To my surprise, I was told Taylor Made was going to just take them back and give me a new set of Sim2 Max irons, free of charge!

So has anyone actually hit these things yet? I see official reviews but I take them with a grain salt, not seeing any user posts on any of the golf forums so I was just hoping for any input on them.

I actually despised my M4s, the width of the sole bugged me, very little workability. So I was hoping to get away from the super GI irons with my next set.

Am I crazy to be tempted to just sell the Sim2 Max set and purchase some Srixon Z585s which are on sale this weekend?

Thanks for your time!

My last set were M4s, just moved into a P770/P790 combo set.

When I went in for my driver fit last week they gave me the SIM2 Max 7 iron to warm up with and I was impressed. Felt like a big step up from the M4s but still in the SGI category, no question. I was carrying the 7 180 with better than expected spin numbers consistently, with the M4s I was at 165. That being said, in terms of workability and shape, they are in the same boat as the M4s.

To answer your question, they are good clubs, but they don’t necessarily meet your criteria. If I were you, I’d sell them while they are still new in the wrapper and make the switch.

Holy, my 7 was also 165...kind of crazy gaining 15. I am still leaning towards some Srixons or even the P770s like you moved into. Was there much of a learning curve moving to those from the massive muscle back M4s?

Thanks for your response!

Take those numbers with a grain of salt. My M4s were based on my on course data from over 100 rounds, the SIM2 was on 10 shots on GCQuad indoors.

I haven’t been able to game the new irons yet (lovely Canadian winters) but I’ve taken them to the range twice. If anything, I find them easier to hit likely due to the fact I was fit into them. I’m playing the Modus 105s in them and they are my favorite shaft I’ve ever hit, hands down. Time will tell how they compare on the course.

What’s your hdcp and how often do you play?

Should have said this in my last post but regardless of your ability I’d go in for a fit before you make any decisions. Keep the new irons in the wrapper until you’re 100% sure.

You and your fitter will know pretty quickly if Srixons or the 700 series irons are a better fit then the SIM2s.

I've heard nothing but good about those modus sticks. I will be getting fit come hell or high water this go around with whatever my new set is.

My HDCP is sitting at 9.6 at the moment, was only able to get in around 40 rounds this year due to having another little one join us in August, probably only played 5 times after that.

For years I played either the 04 or 05 version of the TM Racs, can't remember.  My iron game was my strength before the M4s. Man I loved those things, so I think I'd be fine getting back to a thinner sole.

Isn’t the Sim2 Max OS the M4 evolution. The SIM2 Max would be more comparable to the M3 from the era of your irons.

This makes sense, but I haven't even been able to find a measurement on the sole width of either Sim2 Max models, but by just comparing pics, even the M4s look to be thinner than the Sim2 Max set.

For reference I’m playing off 12, so if we were basing things on that alone (which we established we’re not lol) then you should be more than good to go.

Let us know what happens at your fitting, seems like you have a good idea of where you’d like to go!

True, the soles are not drastically different (using pics), but the face is a good bit smaller in the non-OS version if the trend holds. I’ve not compared them directly…
