do you have to change your diet when you are....older?

diet related illness
When I was younger, there were no fear of mad cow contaminated beef ( either that or we did not know).
Hamburgers and hot dogs and a bag of chips were common snack at the turn.
I, particularly love nuts ( not the kind you're thinking ), all kinds of peanuts, almonds, pistachio, even pumpkin seeds.....
Past Winter, I had developed something new that had never bothered me in my life prior to. After enjoying a big bag of peanuts ( like the 5 ib. bag from Costco ) over several days while watching Golf Channel in the evening after kids had gone to bed ( of course with a drink or two ); I had gout in my big toe.
It started in my left big toe and around the bottom and the top area at the base of the big toe.
I thought it was a bunion, but it turned out to be gout.
It was not fun, I would put this as much a bother to me as the episode of a samll kidney stone I had had one time. The swelling was so bad, I could not put any of my shoes on even the loosely fitted sneakers.
Luck had it when it went away like within 10 days, then the right side started within a week. :)
I'll tell you, no more nuts and high protein from beef for me; even have to cut down on my alcohol consumption.
What a drag.

Happened to my best friend and golf buddy, age 65 who really likes the "Sauce!" He told me that in bed, the weight of a sheet touching his toe was excrutiating. It ruined a winter golf vacation in Florida for him. I would be willing to bet that it is not the nuts or beef, but the alcohol. Keep the drinking to a very moderate level and you should be just fine. :(

I don't drink alcoholic beverages nowadays like I did when I was in my 20's; a couple of glass of wine is plenty for me.
I had read up on the so called gout food ( food that would trigger a gout attack ); food like, anchovies, shell fish, smoked meat, meat extract, sardins, mackerel, yeast, asparagus, mushrooms, dried pea.......

You know, we all have to deal with these suttle changes which occur as we get a bit older. I look very young for my age and my "Sawbones" tells me that I am a very fit 66 year old. I'm very athletic and my golf game is excellent, (Almost back into single digit). These are the changes which I have had to make over the last 3 years: I MUST get 8 hours of sleep each night. I eat 50% less food than I did 3 years ago. I only drink 1 light beer or 1 glass of wine per day. I take 1000 mg of Super Omega Three Fish Oil and 2000 mcg of Vitamin B12 per day. I walk all golf rounds, around 70 rounds per year. I ride my road bike, average 30 miles per week. I don't smoke cigarettes but will have a corona once in a while after a good dinner with coffee, usually in the warmer weather because I have to smoke it outside. I take no prescription medication and feel very fit. If however, I did not do the above listed items, I would feel lousy! I was quite a "Hell Raiser" when I was younger, but now I watch my step! My wife is a very beautiful woman with the figure of a 25 year old. She is an added incentive to keep myself fit and trim. :)

Rony,
I'm sure you have your personal physician to look after your health, but I just found out something that I'll need to bring to your attention.
Vitamin B-12 is not recommended to be taken in large quantity. Because your liver is the only way to process the B-12. Even some others believe a large intake of the B-12 will do wonders for your health, it'll wear out your liver sooner than it's time ( if not damaging it ).
I was told not to take more than 1000 mcg per week, for a long term use.
Fish oil ( Omega 3 ) is different, if your body could not process it, it'll just past through your system.
B-12, it's another matter.

Where can this be confirmed?

You can now purchase B12 1000 mcg that is sublingual.

How can that delivery system be processed through the liver?

I was told the Subligual delivery system is a faster absorbing method but sometimes the dosage will not be 100% accountable. Besides the point.
Unless you have a medical need for the large dosage of Vitamine B, for a normal body, 2000 mcg of B-12 daily will probably do more harm than good.
I was told to think of it this way, if a human body has to work hard to digest or disposed of large quantity of anything, it's not good for you.
Vitamine B has to be metabolized by liver.
Ask your physician for the daily large dosage of B-12.

To be sure I have an excellent personal physician. In the bloodwork from my 07 physical, he observed something pertaining to my red blood cells. Not the count, but the size. He sent me to a Hemotologist/Specialist, and after more blood work, it was confirmed that the size of my red blood cells was too large. My liver is in perfect condition, and my red blood cell count is dead on. The initial treatment for this is a double daily intake of B12. I have a B12 deficiency! If after 3 months, they are still too large, (Which he doubts will be the case), the treatment becomes direct injection of B12. I have to eat more red meat, liver, citrus, green leafy vegetables, whole wheat. I eat lots of fish and chicken. He said that most of the bad cases of B12 deficiency are with Vegetarians! Was it not for this, the only thing I would be taking each day would be the Fish Oil. Anyhow.......THIS is why you get an annual complete Physical! :cheesy:

You do have a special situation than the norm.
I'm glad you're in good hands.[/quote]

Thank you. I was told this is not serious as pertains to me. Here I thought I was doing the right thing by eating very little red meat. Go figure :clapping:

As I have gotten older, I have found that my diet has a much more profound influence on how I feel. When I was younger, I could eat anything and my furnace would burn it up without a problem. These days, when I eat poorly, I feel badly.

A while back, I started watching my calories and fat intake. Wow was that an eye opener. I started cutting my fat and calories and eating a balanced diet. All that excess weight that I had slowly put on over the years started melting off. More importantly, I feel fantastic and energetic all day long.

On one hand, it is a drag that I can't just stuff my face with whatever I want any more. On the other hand, it is nice to know that if I eat well, my body responds.
