Sun Mountain

Recommended Posts

My girlfriend got me a Sun Mountain Tenton bag for Christmas and since I live in Ottawa, golf season has just started. I’ve played about 6 rounds it and I’ve noticed that the plastic handle on the top of the bag is causing some good sized scratches in my 3 wood shaft. I called their customer service and the guy I spoke to didn’t seem to care and offered no help to resolve the issue. Ideally they’d exchange the bag or something like to that extent but he offered nothing and basically just said that’s how the bag is designed. Am I wrong for thinking they should resolve the issue? Has anyone else had any problems with this bag?

No experience with Sun Mountain (I'm a Ping bag guy), but I've seen that happen to other people when the dividers aren't wrapped in some sort of soft or cloth material.

It's a bad bag design, but unfortunately I'm not surprised they aren't willing to help you out. To be honest I'm not really sure what they could do to help. As the guy said that is how the bag is designed, and although you didn't know this would happen you (or your GF in this case) purchased the bag knowing the handle was plastic.

If you can't return the bag and get a refund your best bet is going to bet buying some headcovers with socks that protect the shaft paint from rubbing off.

Yeah it’s a tough situation. I’d be happy with an exchange or refund. I definitely didn’t expected a new bag to be causing this issue. I can’t see myself ever getting another Sun Mountain bag after this experience.

Maybe arrange you clubs so unprotected graphite shafts aren’t near exposed plastic not covered in fabric?

I’ve owned many Sun Mountain bags and have never had any issues with quality.  If anything the bags I’ve purchased have had some of the best divider protection I’ve used.

I'm usually a fan of Sun Mountain bags but that seems like a bad design not having more offset on the handle. Since it sounds like they aren't interested in helping and if the bag is otherwise good, you could try wrapping the handle in some of that spongey wrap they use on tennis racket grips or bike grips. That might provide enough cushioning to avoid any more scratching.

I’m going to try to exchange it at golf town but if I’m unable to I think I’ll try that.

Almost every bag I’ve owned has done this to my fairway woods over time. Doesn’t seem to impact the performance or weaken them in any way so I don’t worry about it.

This is my first bag to do this and it’s my first Sun Mountain bag. I’ve had Callaway, Ogio, TaylorMade, Wilson, etc... and nothing like this.

I understand the frustration, but I don't see how it's Sun Mountain's issue (or even Golf Town's).  Just put the 3 wood (and any other woods with non-sock headcovers) in different slots of the bag so they won't rub when taken in and out.  I'd also get some better headcovers, because even without that plastic piece other stuff in the bag (iron heads, etc.) are going to get to that shaft.

Get some soft fabric/velour material and hot glue it to the plastic handle.

I have a Sun Mountain 3.5 and have just moved my clubs to a new (2018-2019) 2.5 bag.  The design of both bags simply don't allow the plastic handle to abrade the shafts in the top slot.  Here is my 2.5 bag from the top.
