Aluminum ferrules

Has anyone else tried aluminum ferrules on .355tt? I got a great deal on some Mizuno JPX 921 HM Pro's. Just needed to pull the R flex and put some S flex in. I decided to go with a Mizuno blue theme for the ferrules and grips. Got some blue aluminum ferrules on eBay and they won't go on past a 1/4 inch. Anyone else have this issue. .370 ferrules have no issues obviously!

What's the ID (inner diameter) of the ferrule?

 

Sounds like you got a set of ferrules made/designed by someone who doesn't know what they are doing and made the ID too small.

 

All taper tip shafts are only .355" at the very tip.   They taper up to .370" over the first 1" of the tip.    So a ferrule for a .355 tp shaft should NOT actually have an ID of .355".   In fact, there really is no reason to need different ferrule sizes for .370" and .355" tp shafts since the shaft OD is going to be about the same at the top of the hosel where the ferrule sits.

Ferrule manufacturer's can get away with that "mistake" with plastic ferrules - since they can stretch when heated.  In fact some builders like the fact that they are too small since it results in a tighter fit when it cools down again.   But the only option with metal ferrules is to drill or file out the ID until they actually fit properly.

They are .355 ferrules, I was going to put on my mp-20's. I thought a Mizuno blue would be a cool look. I got some red .370 for my neighbors Adams XTD irons a few months back and they were good quality and look great. You hit the nail on the head. They have a .355 ID. The seller had no idea what I was talking about, but they agreed to send blue .370's.

I put some blue aluminum ferrules on some Mizuno irons but I got the .370s, no issues at all.  They look sharp, people compliment them all the time.

I made the mistake of buying those same ferrules. Took a Dremel to the inner diameter and got it to work. I was only doing one club (Mizuno Fli-Hi utility iron) so no big deal. I don't think I'd have the patience to Dremel them out for a whole set.

Get a round file, I think 3/8”. It tapers down to a diameter smaller than the ID of the ferrule. To make sure you are filing evenly, raise the ferrule up the file till it comes into contact with the diameter of the file. Start twisting the ferrule counter clockwise against the teeth of the file. Only light pressure is needed. Do not twist clockwise because it will force the ferrule into the ascending direction of the teeth making it impossible to turn. Keep checking the fifth regularly to make sure you don’t file too much.

They’re aluminum, right?  Just buy a .370 reamer.  You can easily open them up by hand.  Reamer and chuck handle, if you don’t have one, probably no more than $20.  Just buy the cheapest reamer you can find.  You’re only using it once so don’t need the highest quality.  Be sure to use a little cutting oil.  You can probably do the whole set of ferrules in 15 min.
