Was Karsten right? X in everything

Back when i started playing in the 80's in Phoenix, the club i worked at went all in on Ping. So much so that i would drive across town once a week to take clubs in for repair or adjustments. (Karsten even followed me in the door once and worked on the club i had). Anyway he always had very stout shafts, and i have always kind of agreed with that. Always played something stiffer to gain control. Anybody still buy into this? After trying a bunch of irons with softer shafts and not seeing see a whole lot of difference in ball flight and a much better feel. (Catalyst 5.5 feel really good by the way), Im ready to soften things up. Anybody do this and regret it?
