Junior Memberships in NYC, Northern NJ, Queens Areas

Hello everyone. I am 28 residing in Manhattan, with no car. I have been researching junior memberships at clubs that are 1-3 miles off the Metro North, LIRR, and NJ Transit lines. I have a foldable bike that I can ride to the course once I'm off the train. I have read a lot of great info on these forums, but wanted to see if anyone had more knowledge to share.

I am looking for cheaper / more affordable options, but I'm willing to look into anything that could be worthwhile. The below list are the courses I have researched. If anyone has any information (particularly pricing) to share, or other club suggestions I would greatly appreciate it!

  • Forest Hill Field Club - (NJ)

  • Pelham CC - (NY)

  • Colonia Country Club - (NJ)

    • Pay your age - 2800 + 1500 = 4300 for Active Membership until March 2023

  • Leewood Golf Club - (Eastchester, NY)

  • Lake Isle Country Club - Semi Private - (Eastchester, NY)

    • $4,180 Daily Golf for non Eastchester Residents

  • Lake Success Golf Club - (Queens)

  • Suburban Golf Club - (NJ)

  • Metuchen G&CC - (NJ)

  • Knollwood Country Club - (White Plains)

  • Westchester Hills CC - (South of White Plains)

  • Metroplois Country Club - (White Plains)

  • Century Country Club - (White Plains

These are some good options. I would email and find out first if they have availability. COVID helped country clubs all across the country and waitlists are more apparent, along with higher initiation fees.

The only one in NY I played was Knollwood in an outing. Very nice course but I do not know of the cost structure.

In regards to NJ, Colonia is a pretty good deal. The course is nice but it is not as nice as Suburban or Metuchen IMO.

Metuchen did not have an official driving range when I played. Suburban is strictly golf. Both will require caddies on weekend mornings.

I visited Forest Hill for a holiday party and they had a great mens league, with a lot of members in the their late 20's early to mid 30's. This was back in 2013, so I am not sure how it is now. I have heard the course is very nice.

Metuchen, Suburban and Forest Hill will all probably be similar in dues. The fact you are under 30 helps as they will be cheaper.

As I stated earlier, send an email and see what they say. They may say you can come for a tour and possibly a round of golf (at no charge) or a small fee.

Good luck!

Don't bother with Century unless A) you're Jewish and B) your ancestors owned a department store in Manhattan and your family still lives of the fortune that department store made them.

Metropolis is also a Jewish club.

Your best bets for affordability coming from the city are Pelham, Leewood, and Lake Isle.

Knollwood has pretty high dues, from what I'm told, but is a nice course.

Thank you both for the insight. Right now, it looks like Colonia CC is probably the best budget pick for now. Are either of you aware of any clubs accessible via the Metro North, NJ Transit, LIRR etc. that are in the price range of under $5k all together?

Under $5K? If you can find one, I'd be shocked. I'd imagine $8-9K would be the best you could find.

I was in a similar boat.  Consider getting a car - opens up a lot more possibilities and to me, is just easier than being jostled about on a train then taking an Uber or walking to a course.

That said, check out Inwood without a car.  LIRR and the club runs a shuttle from the train station.

Lake Success is the best bang for your buck its super close to NYC you can take the LIRR to Little Neck or Great Neck and then it is 2 miles, a bunch of NYC guys with cars too once you get to know the membership you can car pool. 5k a year under 40 no food min, initation etc been there 3 years and enjoying it. Trust me I did my research at all the options and this was as good as it gets on a budget

Does Lake Success have a driving range?
