Spalding Tour Edition COLD FORGING

Hello y'all,

 

I have several of these clubs in my possession and am wondering about the whole COLD FORGING process.

 

What is meant by this and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

 

I have seen this with Spalding Top Flites and even Titleist Vokeys.

 

Any help would be much appreciated.

My first reaction was "marketing," but decided to consult the google gods.  Turns out it's a real thing in the forging world.  🙂

 

The short version is that cold forging is done closer to room temperatures, as opposed to what we're used to thinking about, extremely hot metal being hit by forging dies.  Apparently advantages and disadvantages to both.

Advantages of hot and cold forging include:

• Hot forging. Increased ductility for more complex parts and allows for more options for customization
• Cold forging. Creates no waste, requires little to no finishing work, maintains dimensional accuracy, and results in high surface quality.

Disadvantages of hot and cold forging include:

• Hot forging. Additional cost for heat treatment, less precise dimensional tolerance, risk of warping
• Cold forging. Few options for customization, risk of residual stress, may require heat treatment

👆 This is the type of quality info that I expect from these forums... and why I keep coming back.  Never had a clue there was a difference.  Just figured it was a marketing ploy.
