Avoid Augusta Municipal. It's known locally as the Cabbage Patch for good reason. It's a historical track with quite the local following (and one of the two courses I grew up on because it's cheap), but is less than stellar condition wise and not in the league with the others you mentioned. I would put them in this order with very little separation between them: The River, Forest Hills, Gordon Lakes.

I think I'll swap Augusta Muni with Aiken GC!

Aiken is a cool very short track. Consider Monticello in McCormick SC, it's my favorite layout around. Buy FH and the river are good. Gordon Lakes is great for a military course but it's still a military course (not enough budget to really keep the course nice, they do well with what they have though).

Since I was in the Army I enjoy playing military courses, but I know the conditioning isn't all that great sometimes. They do not get any tax money for Morale, Welfare and Recreation. It's all self funded.

 

I am tempted to play The River, we shall see.

Second this. Savannah Lakes (Tara and Montecello) remains my favorite courses ever. It is a therapeutic experience playing these courses.

Played both of these courses a couple weeks ago and they were very fun. Lots of elevation change and the greens were tricky.
