Questions about the Savannah area

We are considering moving to the Savannah area. We will be coming down in a few weeks, and will be looking at Savannah Quarters. How is the course? Is it walkable? How busy is it? How is the pace of play? We are not going to look at The Landings. The flood risk was too high. Any info will be greatly appreciated, and are there other private courses in the area that we should consider?

We went to Savannah Quarters today, and the neighborhood was very nice. The course looked good, but is pretty spread out, and looks to have some good walks between holes. Pooled, Ga looks like a giant strip mall. Not nice. The traffic was very heavy. Does not look like a place we would want to live.

So sorry I'm late on this. The Landings is the one best developments in that area. 6 courses. I've had the good fortune to play all of them. It's a first class development.  It's a bit expensive - at least for me. Have you looked at Savannah Lakes Village? It's about 45 minutes north of Augusta in South Carolina. Just checking because I'm going to check it out first week in June. Good luck.

Trying to be the golfer my dog thinks
I am.

We thought of The Landings, but eliminated it for two reasons. First was that it was too expensive. $40,000 down, ang about $1200 a month. Second, and biggest reason was it is surrounded by rivers, salt marsh, and intercoastal waterway, and only 10 feet of elevation. When searching properties, the risk of flooding is pretty darn high as is the projected cost of property damage. We were actually in Savannah last Thursday, and it was 93 degrees. I don’t want to be there in July and August. Also, we really enjoyed the historic part of the city with the beautiful squares, but we thought the riverfront area was pretty crummy.  Parts we liked very much, and parts we didn’t like at all, but I really don’t think we could tolerate the summers down there.

You may want to consider Bluffton with highly regarded private clubs at Colleton River, Belfair, Berkeley Hall, Hampton Hall and several other highly regarded private courses nearby.  Long Cove, on the island, is one of the top 5 courses in SC.  I don’t know prices but I am sure you can easily get that information.

You will get about 9 months of good golf weather but it will be hot for 2-3 months.  I lived there 3 years and enjoyed it a lot but left for family priorities or I would still be there.

Savannah Lakes looks very nice. We kind of want to be close to a fairly large city, so I’m not sure it would be a good fit for us. Please post your impressions after your visit.

jar59's suggestions are good. I played Belfair many, many years ago when, I think, there was only one course. A great layout. Yes, it does get hot. I retired to Gulf Shores, AL for the past 10 years, and while the weather allows play all year round, mid-June thru the end of August can be brutal - especially as one gets older.  I'm trying to find something between the 32nd and 35th parallel to moderate the heat a bit.

I think we need to be close to a good sized city to give my wife things to do. We looked at Pinehurst, but there isn’t much for a non golfer. We just got back from a week at Hilton Head, and she liked being there, but said she couldn’t live there. Leaving HHI we saw the “Evacuation Route” signs on 278, and the reality of living there hit home. Winston-Salem has pretty much everything we want, except warmer winters, so we’ll probably stay here. I’m a member at a very walkable course, and play with a large group of really good guys, and that will be the most difficult things to duplicate if we move.
