(Hopefully)
A friend of mine and a current caddie at PineHurst Resort in NC is going to hopefully put in a good word for me. He is also a customer at the golf store that I work at and a scratch golfer(not that it matters). If all goes well I should have to go through some type of interview process and I was just wondering what to expect in the interview and any tips or helpful tidbits that might help me outshine that other candidate. The course is Pine Hurst No.2 I havent even played this course yet and I live about 35-45 mins away. Im a decent golfer who shoots in the low 80's due to only playing once every 3 months or more when Im playing golf on a regular basis I play mid 70's. I very rarely 3 putt and can read a green fairly well. I can carry a bag and two if need be. So any useful info would be greatly appreciated.

I think golf knowledge and the ability to read greens would probably be just half of what caddying is all about, if even that much.

You should also try to emphasize your ability to provide a good service to the customer. If you have past customer service experiences definetly try to really play that.

I caddied at Vineyard Golf Club on Martha's Vineyard and the biggest tip I can give you is to make sure you are providing the best service. It doesn't really matter how well you can read a green because most of the people you will caddy for will not be able to get it on that line anyway. It also doesn't matter how good a golfer you are. Some of our best caddies weren't very good golfers at all. The biggest thing though is to make sure you are able to follow every shot. Golfers hate it when they lose a ball when they have a caddy. Sometimes they will hit it so far into the woods it won't make a difference. The old saying "keep up and shut up" still rings true. Only give advice if you are asked. Don't make small talk with the player unless they start the conversation. Oh, and always keep the clubs clean and the headcovers on, even the putter cover. Good luck and have fun. Caddying was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

I have caddied on the Ladies european tour and at St Andrews in my younger days. Are you bag carrying or Caddying? Always ask the customer which they prefer? As stonebridge pro said if its a case of bag carrying, keep the mouth shut! However, if you have a customer who is looking for more hands on help then get to understand a yardage book and pin sheet properly, and know where the members "bounces" are on the course. Keep your eye on weather conditions, keep some tees in your pocket and a ball or 2 (but don't let your guy see the balls! Negativity!!). There is nothing worse than seeing a frustrated golfer having to go and look for balls and tees in his or her bag, it does not improve the mood!

Make sure to wet up one end of a towel so you can clean the clubs properly and dry them. Maybe invest in a wire groove cleaner small enough to fit in your pocket.

The most important piece of advice i can give you though is never ever make a negative comment. Positive words of encouragement are always the way to go. Especially if you want a good tip!!

And remember that this is one of the best gigs in the world and in the immortal words of a certain former greenskeeper about to win the Masters (a fairytale story no less!!!)

Your a Looper

A Jock

A CADDY!!!!

I caddied at Old Memorial in Tampa and when I went in to talk with the Caddy Master, it was mostly about what I knew about the game and what I knew about cadding. They want to make sure you are not a idiot and knwo what to do.

When it comes to reading greens and giving advice, that all depends on the player. SOme folks wanted me to give them everything, reads, distance....clubs. And some guys just wanted the number and that was it. You just have to read the person you are looping for, I usually talked to them on the putting green before hand and got a feel for them and let them know if they wanted me to read greens or any advise I would offer it.

I know I had to caddy for the Caddy Master and part of my interview. The biggest thing for me was to treat it like you were playing yourself and carring you own bag. Once you are htere for a while you will learn some of the short cuts, like the holes you can fore caddy on and places you can drop the bag off.

During your interview be sure to show your enthusiasm about getting this job. Also, let them know that you are dependable, and will show up early, EVERY day, ready to caddy, and you will stay as late as needed.

I caddied all through high school, college, when I was on leave from the service, and even on weekends when I was first married (need that cash), and the one thing that would tick the caddymaster off was caddies who looped in the morning, and then took off after getting paid. He'd be left with no one for the afternoon, or early-evening golfers.

Good luck. Great gig, great money, healthy work.

Yep. I was the assistant caddymaster at a high end club this year. I hated when the guys would dip out after the morning loop.

As a caddy, when theres money to be made GO AND MAKE IT. Especially as a beginner caddy take any loop you get. Work hard...go the extra mile. Tell the player "Nice shot" when appropriate. Fix divots, rake bunkers, keep the clubs clean, never smoke in front of the players, never use your cell phone when on the course (yes..even texting). Call the player Mr. or Mrs. unless told to do otherwise. Be polite. Remember that the players are paying a lot of money to be there and they want an experience. Help with making that experience enjoyable.

Here are some helpful tips as well...

Always have spare socks and shoes (if yours get wet in the morning and you don't have a change for the afternoon loop your dawgs are gonna be screaming)

Be in shape! The job is somewhat physically demanding. If you can't carry two bags for 18 holes don't even bother signing up to be a caddy.

Stay hydrated and eat healthy. Water is crucial to caddies. So are bananas and powerbars. Keep you energy up and you will be a better caddy.

Trying to caddy hungover is not only no fun but it will not help you tip.

If you have any other questions just PM me...I will do the best I can to answer them.

Good luck...

?!?!?!?!

Umm, maybe you've missed the point of caddying.

Well I understand the other essential dutties of caddying. My friend who caddies at Pinehurst says that sometimes they have to carry 2 bags thats the reason I have brought it up. I have not missed the point of Caddying.

I believe that Pinehurst's caddie program is run by a company called caddymaster if thats the case then they will train you to caddie the way they want you to, which is very different than most caddie programs operate.

good luck

Yes they use caddymaster, How is it different than most other places.

Learn to calculate yardages from a pin sheet fast and most importantly of all IMO don't offer advice unless they ask for it.

Also I see your a Ron Paul supporter, are you just on the bandwagon or do you actually know and support his policies?

Will make sure to not give advice unless it was asked of me. Has anyone ever gone through Caddymasters training program?

yes at Tpc canyons and its lame, I caddied on 2 tours and at a few resort courses and never have I seen a more lame way to work around a track than the way Caddymasters company training dictates.

they have you walk off exact steps at a 45degree angle to the player for each shot in where they want you to stand, they want you to present the bag at something lame like a 20 degree angle to the player so he can look down and pull a club. and dont get me started on there green reading procedures

the program lasted about 5 months at TPc before everyone told them the get lost

they also offer the lowest per bag to the player than any place I have seen the good news is you can travel and work at pebble, whistling straits and other fine courses

if its your first caddie gig then you might enjoy it

good luck :partytime2:

I used to live and work in Pinehurst in the golf industry. Caddying at Pinehurst is a very busy job, especially during the summer. The heat sometimes can be unbearable and the golfers playing the many Pinehurst courses have no business playing (many hackers). The caddy program at Pinehurst is top notch and many veterns there will train you on the courses. Pinehurst #2 and #4 especially. good luck and let me know how it goes for you. Be sure to take time an enjoy your caddy experience there as you will learn about the history and meet many awesome people. Good Luck!

On another note........

Got a call today from the caddiemater and did a phone inteview and passes. They asked general questions about golf and about myself and past work experience. Has a Interview set up for me on Thursday. If I pass that then I have to make it through there on-course-training.

Wish me luck.

what were some of the phone interview questions? just curious.

- What are the 4 majors in golf? I answered with the Players championship rather than the PGA championship. I did however get the rest of them.

- What is your handicap?

- What is par on most golf courses?

- What is a eagle on a par 5?

- birdie on a par 3?

- What does the term " Your away mean"?

- What is the course rating?

- What is par on most golf courses?

There were several other questions like this to see if you have the basic knowledge of golf I guess. I passed and made it to the next round and have a interview on Thurs.

Oh yeah another question he asked was

-what club do most people hit from 100 yards in? My answer was wedge? and he said Good

-The 150 yard marker determines 150 yards to where? My answer was the center of the green. and he said Great.

Couple more that might come to me if they do I will post them.

I'm relocating to Nashville, Tennessee this fall, and I'm interested in finding a job at a golf course. Unfortunately I don't have any contacts, as I'm moving there from San Francisco. I've only been playing the game for a little over a year now, but think that it would be a great spring/summer job before I start grad school in the fall. At that point, I'd like to transition to weekend work.

1) What is the best approach to take when contacting golf courses/country clubs?

2) What kind of job should I be looking for? I'm 25, college grad qualified in sales and some operations. I don't need anything too fancy, just a good way to bring in $1-2k min. over the summer, and some spending money during the school year.

Misterbrister follow your heart man. I would look up caddiemaster or other agency on the web and find a number and call and be persistant. I called 3 times before they actually told me I was hired.

Oh yeah thats the point of this post. I start training on March 3rd my fathers 60th birthday. Im thrilled. Will Let you guys know what training is like. Its a week long by the way. Till then shoot low scores everyone.

Got the Job I start Monday! Training was great. We learned to single bag, double bag, and forecaddie. I tell you Pinehurst is one Beautiful place. I often caught myself daydreaming almost just staring at the hills, the perfect greens, and shadows stretching across the fairways as the sun started to go down. The last day It absolutely poured on us, which actually helped me in a way. It was raining so hard that the water was flowing off the green so I had really easy reads. I guess all the reading on how to improve my game actually helped me there. for those of you who know the tip... " Imagine water flowing off a green and thats how the ball will go" .....or something like that. (sorry we are celebrating over here...lol) Im happy about the new job, but not about the speeding ticket I got going up there one day. On another note Caddiemaster is a wonderful program and I would recomend anyone to look them up they might have a course that they caddie at near you. They have alot of courses across the U.S. I will have to keep you guys posted what its like.

Off Topic: Just installed my new tour concepts today and will play with them tommorrow hopefully. I hit a couple in the net and they felt pretty good but I hate hitting in the net.
