Question about putting 3W shaft into 7W

Just got a great condition G410 7 Wood however it has a senior flex in it. I got a stiff Alta 65 CB that comes in a G410 3W off ebay. Am I good just hacking an inch off the butt for 7w length or does it need to be tipped any also?

If you install it as it is, you are soft stepping the shaft 2 x. Move the shaft to the 7W head, set a tape that "removes" 2.0 inch on the butt/grip, place your hands below that tape, and try off the club. If it feels loose, have the connector pulled, and tip trim as you like. (typical 1.0 inch nore tip trim on 7W vs 3W)

Tipping is personal preference, generally a mfg would recommend 1" on a 5/7w. 

 

Will you notice it? Dunno and as Howard states perfectly the most analytical way is to install, grip down and if happy pull grip and butt trim, otherwise you can still tip trim a smidge.

 

For my personal 7W I simply tip trimmed 1"  per GD recommendation on a YS Nano and went to town.

I'd like to bump this post. I just purchased a tsr2 7 wood head only and then I found a Tensei 1k black 3wood shaft 42.5in. Can i simply chop off an inch of the butt and call it good? Standard 7w shaft is 41.5in. Or would I need to trim like .5 off the tip and .5 off butt? Thanks!

try the test above

"Tape off" 1 inch

place your hands below the tape, and try the club like that.

 

if it feels ok, and works, then just rip of the grip, and shorten the shaft by 1 inch.

 

if it feels too soft, it should be tip trimmed 0.5 to 1.0, all depending on...
