Spider X vs Spider EX

I’ve gone through too many putters over the last few years but for me, the Spider X was arguably the best one that I found……………until the Spider EX. To me, it’s that bit more solid and stable than the X. My initial thought was that the EX was too big and “clunky” but my eye got used to it very quickly. It would be very naive for me to state that I’ll never game the X again but the EX rolls true and is forgiving. Am I in the minority? There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of love for this putter on Tour or on here.

I have an EX also (bought it about a year ago), and I love mine. I never owned an X, but I did compare the two before I bought my EX. Personally, I just liked the alignment option on the EX better than the X.

I've noticed the same thing on tour. I've never really seen any sort of reason for it not being as popular. My guess is that the X was already so well established on tour that not a lot of guys were willing to make a change for something so similar. Or it could be because the EX has a different insert (although I'm sure the pros could get those swapped out if they really wanted to).

TM tried to move the CoG forward with the EX. However, they also made the EX bigger. The EX is a bit higher moi because it has an aluminum frame with more weight distributed to the edges and back. The EX has the better feeling (firmer feeling) insert.

I bought a myspiderex so I could try it with a plumber's neck hosel. It looked nice. Rolled nice. But had too little toe hang so I sold it.

It's a very solid putter and is underrated.

I would agree that I think the dual lines with the 3 alignment dots is better than the one continuous line that’s on the Spider X(I have the all copper version).

It is indeed very solid and stable. I sort of want to be better with the X(probably because I see the X on Tour) but I can clearly see and hear that currently for me, the EX rolls and feels so well along with a lesser dispersion and usually having shorter proximity to the hole for my second putt.

FWIW i don’t think i’ve seen one Ex used on Tour, whereas the X is still popular.

It's not a popular head on tour. It isn't overly forward CoG despite yhe design changes. It's not more forgiving/stable as the odyssey 10 and 11 models that are very popular.  It's also a rather large head. It's basically a complete tweener of a design and it seems the pros either want a larger footprint odyssey 10/11 or a smaller design, whether spider x, scotty 5 design, blade, etc.

Just bumping this thread to show some love for the Spider EX. Picked one up a month ago for a great price and love it. First mallet putter style I’ve just in a very long time being a stubborn blade only guy.

I just can’t get over how stable this thing is and the insert is nice and firm. Love it

I agree with this…. The insert feels a bit firmer than the spider x.

I do like the alignment on the spider x a little though.

Got my spider x on the course for the first time today. Standard set up.

the head feels a bit light….. but no issues with distance control. The face does have a bit of a ting sound when struck, but the balls rolls nice. Face feel firmer than I expected from rolling it inside.

these seem to be a super deal in the BST market at around $100-$140….. especially if you can get a hydroblast one to avoid the paint chip

problem.

I gamed a few Spider X the past few years.  I really enjoyed them, especially the last one I had (Hydronlast w Flow Neck).  It’s one of the few insert putters I’ve had over the years that distance control wasn’t an issue at all.

I rolled a EX a few times when they were released and didn’t like them at all.  I didn’t like the feel and for me the alignment aids weren’t my style.

Fast forward last year, and rolled a Spider GT and instantly fell in love and gamed one for 1/4 of last year.  I loved the feel of the True Roll 2 insert.  It was very soft, yet very responsive.

Reading thru this thread reminds me that about how I really wanted to like the EX, but that inset set into aluminum offered a very different feel than that insert set into the heavier fangs of the GT.  It really illustrates how CG and the different materials used can affect the feel of a putter.

The new GTX is meant to be a combo of the two. Rolled one in a store recently really solid putter and like the firmer feel too.
