New ERC?

Anyone tried the new Callaway ERC yet? Thoughts? Any noticeable changes from the previous version?

I've been using the ERC yellow golf ball quite a bit during this winter season and I've noticed a slight improvement to the cover feel of the golf ball. Maybe it's a placebo effect, but I feel like the cover is softer overall then the previous version. Distance wise, it's a little bit longer for me as well. Spin is about the same greenside, consistent run out of the ball once on the green.

 

Is it worth the $5 upcharge? IMHO, yes.

Thanks!! I changed from the old ERC to the TM Tour Response for last year and they went up in cost too… that’s why I’m looking at the ERC again… plus I can get these thru the player program for ~$28 a dozen thru a friend 😁😁

For typical Texas conditions, the ERC isn’t an optimal solution.

 

Consider the Vice Pro +. It has a fairly soft/lively feel and is “distance oriented” similar to the ERC, but it’s spin characteristics, ball flight, and stopping power should be better attuned to your environment.

What "Texas conditions" makes the ERC not optimal? I have used the two previous versions here in North Texas quite successfully since even before they were officially released. I also must admit that, somewhat surprisingly given my slow swing speed at age 75, the Vice Pro +, supposedly for swing speeds 110+ mph, has also worked very well for me.

It has a fairly high maximum height, so is more affected by wind than many. With a lower spin than urethane balls, particularly on harder turf conditions, it won’t tend to stop as progressively across your irons nor have as much overall stopping power.

 

Literally any ball can be used “successfully” in any conditions, particularly if the player understands its play characteristics and is willing to adapt to them. On flatter courses, particularly where the greens don’t tend to be guarded, running balls up can be a very effective approach for instance.
 

That doesn’t mean that that approach is generically optimal though, and many players may not be aware of the potential advantages to other models IMO.

New version abandoned the dual core, no mantle design for a traditional single core, single mantle design (generally easier to make consistently from a manufacturing standpoint). Ultimately this is a low compression ionomer covered ball that is very overpriced considering that there are several urethane options available for less.

I asked about the fact that when Triple Track was introduced, that technology was all about line thickness, spacing and colors (red and blue). Now they've introduced one with different colors, and they've backed off the colors having to be red and blue to it being all about contrasting colors. So which is it?

 

I thought for a ball being non-urethane, despite its great performance (I still have some and use them), the price of the first two versions was really too high. Had the price stayed the same with the addition of the urethane "coating", its price might be worth it. Plenty of options out there for urethane balls that outperform the ERC at a more reasonable price.
