Homna TW-X Review

Recommended Posts

Let's go on a club review adventure with the Homna TW-X irons!  It all started watching the Asian Tour on The Golf Channel a few weeks ago.  I saw this unknown guy smoke a 7-iron 180 yards with a high baby draw using an easy Freddie-like swing - like mine.  I kept watching and noticed he was playing Homna irons.  Hmmm, smooth slow tempo swing with solid results.  I had to investigate.  To my surprise, I found new Homna TW-X irons on eBay for under $500.  I couldn't help myself...

I'm 58 years old and have been playing golf since I was 7 years old.  I have a 6 handicap, but only play on weekends.  Stupid work.  I can swing a club with consistency.  My club head speed has dropped over the years and I finally admitted to myself it's time to consider Vizard 85 graphite shafts for a little distance help.  My 7-iron is down to 140 yards and I need 150 to stay competitive at my course.  I still swing a driver in the low 90's so I went with stiff shafts thinking regular shafts would produce too many snap hooks with the irons.

I'm the "experienced" golfer in that "transition to graphite shafts" phase throwing a big dart to see if it sticks.

I've always been a forged Mizuno guy and love my trusty JPX 850's.  You can't beat the Mizuno feel and ball flight, right?  Well, until you hit it on the toe.  I'm not a club flipper - okay, except for drivers!  I'm excited to try the new "hollow iron" tech and the supposedly added distance and better dispersion, but concerned about the reported Homna TW-X offset, wide soles and whippy graphite.

FedEx promised to deliver my new set yesterday, but the "iron tease" keeps driving past my house without satisfaction on this perfect day in Richmond, Virginia destined for a new iron set range bonanza followed by a cold pint and quiet assessment.

So, stay tuned for my initial reaction and range review of my new Homna TW-X irons.

Im a pretty big fan of my TW-X with c tapers. I played Adams MB2’s for years and have other “ Goat” irons like J15s but I honestly love these things. I’ve only played a few rounds with them but they’ve landed in the bag. That didn’t stop me from having a set of Vega RAF-M delivered yesterday lol. Long story short I think you’ll be pleased

I'm also 58, and have a TW-X 3 iron with the Vizzard 85 S shaft in it. My other irons have Fujikura Pro Iron 95g in Tour Spec S. The Vizzard is a little softer, and I think it will be a good fit for you, if you can deal with the lighter weight. Great clubs.

There's a big TW-X thread in the regular Equipment forum.

They arrived Sunday morning and I already have two rounds complete.  I would have posted earlier, but I’m far too busy after so much range time at the expense of my family.  Luckily, my wife understands there’s a new set of clubs in town and it’s best to let me slob over them for a few days.

And, slob I have!  First impressions made me think of fine art, perfect craftsmanship and sheer beauty.  They instantly classed up my golf bag.  My fellow golfers noticed immediately especially the dozen or so club members that all recently switched to PXG irons.  I do enjoy going against the grain.  The only annoyance was the constant requests to “hit a few” with my sparkling new Homna TW-X irons.  Despite the gripping fear they would mark my new children up, I’ve always found it’s best in the long run to bear sharing one’s bounty rather than be a “dick” about it.  Seriously, don’t golfers know not to request whacking someone’s new irons during the honeymoon period?

The Homna TW-X irons are downright sexy.  A muscleback look with obvious technology that instantly worked for my 58 year old slower yet smooth golf swing.  It was very easy to get the ball in the air and the wider soles are not noticeable or bothersome – even on the 8-9-10 irons.  The topline was thinner than I expected and the offset wasn’t pronounced as some have commented.

I’ve gained 5-8 yards per iron (longest with 4-5-6-7), but was especially surprised how well I was able to finally hit a 4-iron with some consistency.  As my swing speed has declined, it became harder to launch a 4-iron and I even switched to a hybrid.  My club has three par 3’s over 180 yards and I reached them all with this new 4-iron.  That was an unexpected bonus.

The Vizard 85 stiff graphite shafts were my biggest concern, but rather than the expected snap hooks, I generally hit a straight ball both rounds.  The shafts are definitely not the whippy graphites from the past.  If you swing in the low 90’s with a driver, I’d recommend the Vizard 85 stiff shafts on the irons.

Although it’s likely due to new grooves, the stopping power clearly improved using my usual Bridgestone Tour B RX.

One adjustment I did make with the wider soles is playing it back in my stance an extra inch.  This allowed me to catch the face easier.  A ball hit on the face with these irons feels like power and butter – how did they manage that at Homna?  However, these clubs will let you know if you hit it thin.  I lost at least 10 yards going low on the face.

There were also much made of the smaller yet heavier heads, but I rarely hit the dreaded toe monster with them – my usual sin with my Mizuno JPX-850’s.  Despite the lighter shafts, you can actually feel the head in your backswing which initially threw me off.  I’ve decided I like it as it’s helped me keep an inside path.

Overall, very happy with these Homna TW-X irons.  Awesome feeling clubs with unique flare that simply look amazing in my bag.

Really good irons, there’s a big thread on them, search the forums outside of this subsection for more reviews and comments.

I had them in the bag for a while in 4-11 with Modus 105 shafts, really solid irons. The Vizard 85 is a great graphite stock option too, Honma makes good stuff.

The soles are little wide but turf interaction is just fine, never felt they were a problem. Lot of pop being hollow heads but they aren’t filled with goo or foam like P790 and the like, never noticed a “flyer” problem. Forgiving all around, lofts aren’t too strong either with 31 degree 7 iron.

Out of the bag right now but I know I’ll play them again in the future, I kept my set and will never sell them.
