Aftermarket Putter Shafts: Worth it?

Harder to hide when they're overwhelmingly playing steel shafts.  I'm sure many have the CT Tour in their putter.  But you only see a handful of all graphite—Morikawa and some others using various ones.  And I don't think I've seen any BGT shafts.  That other website's own data showed that one didn't do much.

Pros are typically traditional until they have problems ... lol ... and then they experiment. Look at Taylor Montgomery. He has an old Spyder that he repaints himself as needed. One of the best putters on tour. I've seen pros and cons, tried the BGT, but the TPT is the only one I'd get because I know it's perfect to spec and is perfectly round. My instructor collects data, tried the TPT in prototype, says it works and is perfect to spec - I'll take his word for it. Like I said, worth is up to the golfer.

I have never putted with a premium shaft. That said, I don’t see many tour players (with conventional putters) using premium shafts. My thought is that if they were so good, every tour player would be using one. I can see how a premium shaft might be advantageous in a broomstick, but probably not in a 34-35” putter.

In my experience, if you’re able to always hit the sweet spot of the putter you probably won’t see the benefit of a BGT or similar shaft.

But if you miss a bit heel or toe, you possibly can.

I was fit for a putter a few years back.   On the Quintec machine we discovered that I drop the putter to the inside a tiny bit, subsequently hitting the ball a little towards the toe.

This would cause the putter to oscillate during the strike and then I’d lose ball speed and sometimes it would also open the face a bit which equaled a right side miss.

The data on the Quintec clearly showed the BGT shaft helped me on strikes slightly missing the sweet spot.  The putter head stayed more square at impact which equaled a more consistent ball speed and direction.

I suppose it’s analogous to using a forgiving, high MOI driver and missing a bit towards the heel or toe yet still ending up with a good shot in the fairway.

FWIW, at that time was playing to about a 5 handicap so it’s not like I was a terrible putter.  I can just honestly say I saw how the shaft could be beneficial for some and also why it wouldn’t be needed for others (eg: pros).

Great post.

My miss is slightly towards the heel and while I know about it, I can gravitate back towards it at times.
