Odyssey Protype in shape of a #7

NoCalHack

Recommended Posts

I remember the first black odyssey protypes when they came out and they were amazing.  I was looking around Ebay for one and bought this.  It's in the shape of a #7, has a double bend shaft, and a milled face. I love the #7 shape and have 3 #7 putters with white hot inserts.  I usually game my Scotty Champions choice NP2 because I prefer to the feel.

Anyone know anything about this?  Can't find any info whatsoever on the internet.  It was advertised as a Japan only model.

Can't wait to roll this one.  Unless you guys tell me its a fake.

Not saying it’s fake, as the font and weights look legit, but I’m not sure I’ve seen a limited edition odyssey putter NOT have the word Odyssey anywhere located on the putter. Most of the protype putters I recall ever seeing have had Odyssey on them.

Most of the tour dept. #7’s are similar to your head where they do not have any top section alignment so the pro can choose if they want dots, line, nothing etc.. I guess I’ve never seen a limited release or retail #7 shape nor have a top section alignment but I’m also no expert in the Japanese market.

Pretty cool putter and thanks for sharing. If you have time I’d love to see better lighted photos. Roll it well!

Thanks for the response. Looking at the pic again another thing that’s strange is that it’s numbered 2500 of 2500. Does that mean of the 2500 made, this was the last one off the assembly line?

Anyways the guy I bought it from seems legit.   I bought the putter for less than a retail Scotty and bought it to game, not collect. I’ll post better pics when I get it.

^ i was actually just about to comment about that. Not that it is sure sign of a fake, it is odd that either the 1st or last of the production is actually available. Usually these get snatched up by an employee/someone close to the company, unless they did a truly random distribution.

That’s why I think this may be a tour head. The biggest question I have is did this release have an alignment aid on the top. The fact that this one does not makes me think it was a tour head that got out into the wild. I find it really hard to believe Odyssey would release a putter and not put the name Odyssey on it.

More than likely, looks super clean with just the swirl in the cavity imo(i think thats a swirl in that dot). Also leaning this way as well, as with fakes there usually has to be a motivation to make said fake, and i can't fathom why a fake of this would be created.

Putter is in and pics below.

Verdict is that it’s a rare proto. Nobody is going though the trouble to make a fake this good to end up on eBay for $300. I’m really happy I bought it.

The seller has perfect feedback and sells personal stuff. He said he bought it from his local shop. The owner of the shop got it as a gift from the rep for being a good account. I think it was made 2014-2015. 2014 they released the protype ix with the same weights. No 7 model. In 2015 they released the 777. It had an insert. This looks like it could be a proto to the 777. The finish is similar. Maybe the metal too? The naming pt77 also points to it.

I’m almost certain this was never released. The 777 and pt82 are much rare than 2500 and you see them all over. I’ve never seen another one of these in my google searches.

It has a nice shaft. The black kbs ct tour. I changed out the grip and it feels great on carpet. The no sightline is cool. I have 3 odyssey 7s and they all have sight lines.  I need to get it on a real green.

FYI, there's 2 versions of the PT82, one that has red coloring and is limited to less than 3k, which you usually see everywhere. The other has teal coloring and was limited to 164 (82 righty and 82 lefty), that one, you usually never see.

For a milled 7, there is the RSX line too, which CPO will have from time to time.

metal X milled also had a 7 with a milled face. Very similar sole design to mine and dates to 2015.

Anyways I’m curious how many others of this one were made. The 2500/2500 numbering is strange but maybe it was an early proto that they were planning on releasing and never did?  I just don’t see how there could be 2500 out there. Would be curious to see if anyone ever sees another one of these.

OP, have to say I agree with @RollinsonPutters.  That logo in the back cavity screams "NOT QUITE RIGHT" to me.

I'd love to be wrong about that, but I doubt that we are. Hate that for you if we are correct.

Hi guys,

Thanks for chiming in.  I'm completely open to the idea of it being a fake.  I'll make due without the $300 I spent on it.  My kids will eat somehow.   I have emailed odyssey about it to see if they know anything.  Let's see if they respond.  I may also try removing the screws to check out what's under the hood.

The best argument for it being a fake:  I did find it very strange that it is labeled 2500 of 2500 and I certainly haven't seen another, which you'd expect if 2499 others were around.

Here are the arguments against it:

1) As others have mentioned- what is the point of making a fake like this?  If someone is going to spend the time making a fake, then they are going to try and sell it for more than a retail odyssey right?  How does this end up on eBay for $300?

2) It has the same exact design features of other odyssey 7s of that era.  The weights are exactly what they used in 2014-2015.  The soleplate design is exactly like the metal x milled- full soleplate with weights in it.  The screws look completely real for the era. The milled face looks just like the protype line.  The finish is like a 777.   So if its a fake, someone kept all the design features of other odyssey putters around that era and the fake is REALLY good.  But why make such a good fake and not try to make a profit off of it?

3) There was definitely no other odyssey 7s made with that face so nobody could make a fake soleplate and put it on the putter.

I admit I am taking the seller's word for it but fwiw, the guy is a perfect feedback seller who sells personal stuff.  He was also selling a TP Mills putter and some more rare logo head covers.   I'm sure he's does not make fake clubs and he likely has no idea its a fake.  His story is somewhat plausible- he got if from a golf shop.  Whether the shop owner did indeed get it from the rep as a gift, who knows?  But the seller advertised it as a "Japan Proto".

Austie Rollinson who commented just above was the chief designer for Odyssey for a number of years. I get all of the arguments, but I think he would honestly know best out of anyone.

Well damn!  I guess he'd be a good source.  Maybe he is not aware of this model?  I'd be very curious to know what is the giveaway here.

Looking closer I have a vague recollection that it may have been a sample a supplier made for Odyssey to see if they could make a cast version of the Metal X Milled.  If it was, it never moved forward and was not commercialized.  The only reason I say that is the PT77 name.  I only used that on a one-off prototype Odyssey made for Ian Poulter.  It seems odd that someone would name it that with such good graphics.  Also, the font of the LIMTED EDITION was one that I used.

It could be a very rare prototype...that may be a little better than a fake.

Straight from the head of odyssey from 2005-2010.  I love this site  😂

Yes based on my research this was made (or faked) circa 2014-2015.  While you were the boss.

thanks for the info!  It’s not for sale so I guess it doesn’t matter much now. But I figured that it was not released and not a Japan proto.

It’s always cool to get the story regardless of fake or rare proto. Putt well with it! The #7 headshape is personally my favorite and have owned several. I love them.

@RollinsonPutters thanks for contributing as you were so instrumental to the Odyssey brand and putter game. I hope whatever your next chapter is now is going well!
