Fighting EE/Getting stuck

Recommended Posts

Pretty short and simple question, biggest fault has always been early extension and getting stuck behind my body. Backswing has always been short, just what feels most comfortable. Any advice is much appreciated! This is an 8 iron for reference.

The short backswing is fine, its mostly a sequencing and hip turn problem:

Your hip turn is pretty small (also fine) but you start "firing" early, with that firing involving shifting up towards your toes in preparation to firing incorrectly:

This is where you get stuck. You "fire" by quickly kicking your right side towards the ball and your hands drop down and are immediately stuck/out of sequence. Your backswing is flat and your club is laid off, pretty typical "one plane swing" kind of position, but that requires your hand path to me more out towards the ball in the downswing with attention being paid that they don't get left behind. Unfortunately you're dropping them more down and on a collision course with your right leg which means compensations have to made which slows things down.

You end up on your toes at impact, right arm stuck behind you, and early extended. Most of this is being caused by how and when you're firing your hips with the biggest thing to fix being that right side movement. All rotation in the downswing is driven by the left hip pushing back, not the right hip coming forward. The former maintains or increases hip depth, the latter decreases it leading to early extension. Learning how to do this is hard and best approached with slower partial swings, I like the pelvic punch types of drills for this. The goal is to understand how to properly use your lead side to create rotation so you can stop using your trail side and early extending.

Somehow missed your response and just saw it! Makes tons of sense on the hip sequence. I still play some pretty high level baseball so swings get a little mixed up this time of year. Thanks so much for the help/advice. Monte's zipper away thought has really helped me clean up the early extension and keep the right hip from firing out. The pelvic punch drills felt great, got my swing cleaned back up. Thanks!
