Silly One Length Question

Recommended Posts

Hello Folks! I’m in my second year of golfing and have a set of custom variable length clubs coming in the next month or so! In the mean time I ran across a ton of eBay auctions for Radspeed one length clubs that I figured I would buy to mess around with.

I don't know a ton about golf fitting but I had one silly question. Since these are all based off a 7i length would it makes sense that all the Lie angles should be the same for them? They appear to be different and the Cobra spec sheet does confirm this. I’ve been messing around with them for a few range sessions and so far I have to admit… I kind of like them.

My last question is the shaft weights are different based on iron. 5/6 80G Stiff, 7/8/9 90G stiff, and P/G 120G stiff. Is that typical with One Length? If I like the concept enough I figured I’d toss on a set of the Aerotech Steelfiber i110’s I was fitted into during my iron fitting. Thanks for any advice!

Seems like the variable lie is to account for the tendency to pull higher lofted short irons and slice lower lofted long irons with an out to in swing.

It’s counter intuitive on paper but in practice it’s seems to work.

And if it works it works! I like how people talk about liking single length irons like it’s a terrible dark secret.
FYI there is another thread where someone inquired with ping about single length irons and the said they can build any irons to any spec (length lie sw).

I bet if people start showing up with single length / partially single length ping iron sets people won’t feel like they need to be ashamed lol. 😂

Wonderful thank you guys! I might get these run through the fitter to get everything adjusted to what my fitted 7i was to see how it affects them. I took them to the trackman this weekend and really enjoyed playing them there. The distances are pretty spot on for me and my swing. Might give this a legit shot to see how it goes.

Yeah, Cobra with the different lie angles and different shaft weights are a little unusual in the OL game. Most OL vendors that I've seen will recommend the same lie angle, shaft, etc across the entire set. I play Wishon and everything from 4h to GW is 37.5" with the exact same shaft, same head weight, same lie angle, etc.

That said, I haven't really played a Cobra set, and haven't talked to their engineers, so I can't argue that their way or the "conventional" OL way is more backed up by the data.

The big thing is if you like them, and you hit the ball well, then enjoy them.

Picked up some Radspeed one length irons a couple months ago for a song, my third set of single length irons but the first Cobra set. The hot faces were a revelation these things fly far! First thing I noticed messing me up were the lie angles. 8,9,P,G were progressively flatter than the 7i (63.5). Every shot faded right with those clubs. Had them all bent to 63.5 and dispersion was better. But the swings all felt different from one another. Turns out Cobra tips all the shafts per the normal iron number... so 5i is tipped as a 5i, 7i tipped as 7i, 9i tipped as 9i. They also use three different weight shafts going progressively heavier from 5i to GW. Now that my lie angles were not varied (except I left the 5i and 6i upright), a two way miss came into play due to varied shaft flex. It was driving me nuts, so off with the heads (8,9,P,G) and I glued on my old shafts at 37" all tipped the same. Now these four clubs play great, while my 5 & 6 shafts are way too flexy and tend to pull or hook. Unfortunately Cobra also varies hosel length on their clubs, so I can't even pop the 8i or 9i KBS shafts into the 5 or 6, or they end up 1/3-1/2" shorter than the rest of the clubs. So I will be buying 3 more of my old shafts and installing them into the 5,6 &7i.  I plan to SSx1 the 6i and SSx2 the 5i.

What was Cobra thinking with these? They took a simple single-length design with same head weight, shafts tipping, and lie angle and turned it on it's head by varying lie angles and tipping. Heck, the brass tips from the factory didn't even give me the same head weight for most of the irons. All in all, it's costing about $100 for the lie bending and new shafts, not as great of a deal as initially thought, but they are very nice irons and go forever so I'm not too upset about it.
