Evnroll Putter Fitting Exp in Carlsbad

TLDR: Had a great fitting at Evnroll HQ and would recommend it for anyone. Great company and very cool experience. 

 

I am in no means a putter whore but I was looking for a milled mallet with a plumbers neck for awhile. Unfortunately, JT never returned my calls so I asked a friend who recently had an Evnroll fitting. Seeing the different options with plumbers necks I decided to give it a try and booked a fitting at their HQ in Carlsbad. 

 

It was an amazing experience and I would recommend it to anyone. I have had two prior fittings, one with Club Champion (SAM) and one with Roger Dunn Santa Ana (Quintic). I really enjoyed the Quintic fitting and it was eye opening compared to the SAM that just spit out a head type and toe hang percentage. Here is where the Evnroll fitting went above and beyond.

 

I was fit by Travis Escalera, who does R&D for the putter faces. Just to have someone that is helping design the putters fit you is great because of all the different knowledge. He started with all the basic questions, what I was looking for, where my miss was, what was the weakest part of my putting game, etc. Then we were able to go through certain heads to get a feel before we started customizing. 

 

I came in thinking I was going to walk out with a short plumbers neck in either the EV12 or EV5.3. I am coming from a Odyssey 7CH because I like the offset and because my prior fittings had all told me I need 15-20 degrees of toe hang. We tried what I thought I wanted to start out and they felt good, but he noticed something in my stroke that I took the putter back a little inside despite being square at impact. This made sense since I do well on longer putts and struggle with a right miss on shorter putts. I was basically hook putting. 

 

Because of the fitting heads/shafts, you could try and head, any hosel, any length and any grip, changing out each part individually with all else constant. After working hard on finding the right hosel, we determined that the mid slant actually gave me the feeling of offset but was helping smooth out my take away from the inside. Normally it would stop there and we would head to the check out but Travis was in no rush and was going to spend the entire fitting time working on the putter or my stroke. We tried different heads and different lengths and different grips. I was still bringing the club inside slightly but it was far better than before. We looked at loft and lie and every possible option was there to try. At the end, he asked if I wanted to try the gravity grip even though he didnt think it was a great fit for me. He explained it was more for people that struggle taking the putter outside and cutting across it. Because we had the putter head, hosel, length, and lie all figured out, we threw on the grip to try it out. It turned out to be amazing. I was no longer pulling the putter head inside and was putting it great. It was great that we tried it even though it probably wasn’t specifically for my type of miss. 

 

I ended up going with an EV12, black, mid slant with the gravity grip. 

 

I bought the putter there and Travis essentially built it all in front of me. It was a great experience. I will also note that there is a good chance you might not have to pay for every small modification (such as loft/lie bends etc) like you would if you did it online. Also, they have some really cool stuff they can do with feel for some of the heads regarding it being “slow” off the face. 

 

I have taken it to the course and to the practice green and have been very happy. I always struggled with short straight putts (due to the inside take away). With the new putter, I feel very confident hitting 5 ft putts straight and firm. I must have made 6 putts like that during my first round. 

 

If you’re in the area or in the market for a new putter I would recommend going to the Carlsbad HQ.

Also interested in this after previously reading about how Evnroll now has customizable faces for a firmer feel/sound (which apparently turned out to be false?). . .

All they have to do is offer flymilling instead of their normal horizontal grooves.

Did you figure out what the difference between the 11VX and 12 were?  Care to share?  Found this thread, through the same question in a previous thread.  Thanks.

11VX was pretty big compared to the 12. The 12 really is similar to the spider ex. Have been loving it. Lag putting has been amazing and more confident on shorter putts
