Hi all,

 

I will be likely moving to Hudson/Bergen county area this summer and I want to start looking into joining nearby private club...I have been a range rat for most of my golf life and trying to get myself out to play more so I can be a better golfer not a range pro. I am in my early 30s and currently play around 11~15 handicap.

 

Things I am looking for:

-reasonable distance from where I live: I am willing to drive up to about 45 min from where I will be living (likely Edgewater or Fort Lee). I know this can be anywhere plus minus 30 min given the state of traffic.

-good practice facility

-able to walk/push cart

-easy to get on to the course for solo quick 9 holes in the twilight time. I actually do not like playing early in the morning

-hopefully no or short waiting list

 

Things I do not need:

-pools

-tennis courts

 

So I am basically looking for mostly strict golf only membership/course that does not get congested in the afternoon times. Kinda new to looking into private clubs so I am not sure how reasonable this is.

 

My budget would be around $10~15k initiation. I can be flexible with monthly cost (not counting the initiation) but want to spend no less than $1k/month if I can.

 

I have done some digging in this sub and currently interested in the following places

-Upper Montclair

-Suburban

-Hackensack

-Knickerbocker

 

Looking for feedback on these courses and whether they would fit my budget or not. I just found out Upper Montclair is hosting a LPGA event next week so thinking about attending just to see the course. Thanks in advance!

Upper is perfect for what you are describing, but I think the initiation may be a tad hire at this. I'm not a member but my good buddy is and I have played there many times both for regular rounds and for member guests and other special outings - they have great outings.

 

I like Upper's course better, but take a look at Forest Hill Field Club as well. That should be within your budget and the course is decent. 30 min or less drive to the towns you are looking to live as well.

Look at Haworth County Club. My buddy is a member and it's an excellent track.

All 4 of those courses will require caddies. Check out NJ National in Basking Ridge.
