New irons advice

Recommended Posts

As a bit of background I played a lot in my teens and then had a 20 year gap barring a few months about 7 years ago when I bought a set of Titleist ZM forged irons.

I have been playing a lot recently but increasingly regret buying the ZMs.

I have been fitted 0.5 inch long and 2 degrees up (which my ZMs are) but I feel like I would enjoy playing much more with more forgiving clubs.

I hit a set of stealth and a set of aerojets past week in a fitting which felt great but are out of my budget at the moment.

Would I be better going with a cheaper set of game improvement irons that aren't fit for me (no longer shafts and no lie angle adjustment) or sticking with my fitted ZMs hoping I will improve into them before the frustration makes me give up!

Short version; will game improvement irons that are half an inch too short and the wrong lie angle be any better than me fitted but inconsistent ZMs?

If you buy a used set from a reputable shop, they should be able to at least change the lie angle for you.  Something to think about with length, some of the current sets in the last couple of years might be a little longer than "standard" from a few years ago.  Depending on where are live, might also find a decent set of Pings that are 2* or possibly 1* up on ebay or someother similar site.

Cheap game improvement clubs WITH customization of length and lie probably is a short cut straight to the PXG 0211s, but they are loft jacked like crazy.

For more traditional lofts, and probably a club head a player of your skill is more used to looking down at, take a glance at the Takomo... Uhh 201s?  Also cheap and beloved around here.  I do not know the length\lie adjustments available off the top of my head tho, a quick visit to their website should let you know.

Both require adjustment and patience on your part.  Which is easier for you?  IMO Half-inch too short is NOT damaging, but wrong lie can be trouble.  If $$$ is an issue, then you either buy a used set in your price range or put your nose to the grind stone and practice with ZM blades.  IMO the latter is the better option.

If someone becomes proficient with blades, then takes a long break, picking up blades shouldn't be catastrophic or as difficult as it would be for someone that's never played blades.

Sub70 Is reasonable as well. 5-P set is $660 and the 7i is 30* - not great, but not super jacked.

Thanks, I hadn't though about standard length potentially being longer now. Though in the fitting I went through but the sets I was fitted for were new irons and still needed +0.5.

About 6 weeks ago I tested the stealth, aerojet and dynapower irons and the dynapowers felt the nicest for me and had very consistent groupings along with a large sweet spot and very hot of the face. They come with UST Mamiya shafts if after a graphite option and are significantly cheaper than the other two. I got fitted for them and they are an inch longer and 2 degrees flatter.

Driver: Ping G430 Max 9 degree, Tour chrome 2.0 65 stiff

Fairway: Ping G430 3 metal, Tour chrome 2.0 75 stiff

Hybrid: Ping G430 3 hybrid, Tour chrome 2.0 85 stiff

Irons: Wilson Dynapower 5-SW, UST Mamiya Recoil Dart stiff 65

Wedge: Cobra snakebite 2023 black full face 58 degree, 125 stiff

Putter: TaylorMade Corza Ghost Tour

Ball: white, round with dimples
