Melbourne (Winter)

Hi all

 

First time poster and someone who has recently taken up golf (aside from a few rounds I played nearly a decade ago during corporate events).

 

Obviously it's much nicer to play in spring/summer, however I'm trying to get a tonne of experience in during winter in Melbourne, playing public courses

 

With this in mind, what are people's opinions on the best courses for drainage, upkeep etc.?  I played Morack yesterday and, while a good layout, it was a bit boggy (although not as bad as Burnley the week before which is now closed for reconfiguration).

 

So far I've played Royal Park, Yarra Bend, Bundoora and Morack.

Ivanhoe can be very muddy as can Freeway which is a better track.

Further south you can play Sandringham which is across the road from Royal Melbourne so it is on similar terrain with sandy soil.

If you want real dry conditions, then I would go down to St Andrews Beach on the peninsula. Tom Doak design, linksy and very good.

I played Ivanhoe yesterday and the course was in decent nick.

 

Albert Park is also in decent condition, and not the most difficult course, which is good for me given my abilities.

 

Do you have membership anywhere, and if yes, anywhere you'd recommend? I've seen a few things such as FutureGolf etc.  My closest course (apart from Burnley) would be Ivanhoe or Yarra Bend.

Freeway golf course is next door to the private Kew GC so similar ground. Good course and worth your time. And they have a cub membership arrangement.
