Should my Trail arm be closer to parallel on follow through

Recommended Posts

I have worked on many things in my swing, but something that I struggle to replicate, is something I notice I differ on from most (not absolutely all, but most), is the angle of the trail arm (right arm for RH), relative to the ground on the follow through.  also the angle of the lead arm (between elbow and shoulder) relative to the ground.  I notice mine is a lot more vertical, whereas pro it seems to come across their body a lot more.

My questions:

1. What is this a result of?

2. What impact does it have on my shots?

3. How important is this?

4. How to feel it and change it in the swing to improve it?

You have a good swing, but understand that everything that happens after impact is a consequence. Pros are not actively doing things after impact. If you want a flatter follow through with more elbow bend, you need to release the club earlier on a more in-to-out path. Currently you come in very steep from starting with your shoulder turn and therefore have to early extend to get to the ball, which prompts that very vertical follow through you talk about. You have good reactions, since you hit the ball pretty well. Don't worry about hitting it fat. Just work on releasing the club down earlier and turning through afterward.

Drill: Literally keep your back to the target and practice releasing the arms and wrists, hitting the ground next to your right foot. You need to exaggerate an inside release. In the real swing you will naturally move towards the target and turn. The most important thing is to get that clubhead down earlier using your arms and wrists FIRST since you start the the downswing with movement toward the target and rotation. Get that clubhead on a path down, then around; not around, then down.

I like this video. Gives you the same idea. You have good athletic ability, its just you could make it more consistent by releasing earlier on the more inside-to-out path.

+1 on everything @slytown said. I'd like to add that your early extension issues are exacerbated by the fact that at address you're crowding the ball. Your hands are about a single hand-width away from your thighs and your shoulders are forward outside of your hands. So when you early extend, your right thigh goes into the spot your hands were in, and you have to VERY quickly steepen the shaft plane in order to make contact--so naturally the club exits on a very vertical plane as well. From your setup position, trying to change your hand path from "around-to-down" to "down-then-around" would likely result in your hands getting stuck even more behind you and more extreme blocks and flips.

Setup-wise, I'd probably get you to try standing a little further from the ball and standing up a little taller. That, in addition to addressing the early extension issue with hip pivot drills, would help you deliver the club on a shallower/more neutral plane.

So I will try moving back maybe 2-3 inches?  And less knee flex to "stand taller"?  Is this a good starting point?

If I understand, I would not want my shoulders "ahead of hands" at address?  Should they be in-line, or shoulders slightly behind?

Played today, hit a quick bucket before playing. Practicing the above.

had a GREAT ball striking round. But I really struggled to hit my partial wedges (say 60m to 100m shots).  Really really struggled and normally I’m good there.

but off the tee with Driver and 2i was amazing. And off the fairway.  Really clean strikes. And massive distance
