My wife has a conference in Alexandria on the 21st and 22nd of September and I am looking for something to do during the daytime while she is working.  Anyone have a group or anything--not looking to spend too much money or gamble for too much but a small Nassau would be nice--Please let me know we are staying and the Sheraton in Old Town.  Thanks--CW

I live not too far away from there, but I'm unlikely to be free on those days... let me know if you need any course suggestions for while you're in the area.

Not sure how far you would want to venture from Old Town. I'm not familiar with courses in area other than the dc munis. East Potmac and Langston. They aren't great courses or anything but they are fine. Im pretty sure that area of NOVA has a lot more privates than public.

There's definitely more private than public in this area, but there are some pretty good public ones (they can be pretty expensive, though, especially on Fridays and weekends).  The two closest good courses that come to mind are:

Laurel Hill (30 min, depending on traffic) is relatively close and one of the best public courses in the area.  The USGA hosted the finals of the Pub Links there about 10 years ago.  Really good layout, usually in good shape.  They also have the best practice area around, though the weather has been bad enough that, last time I was there, they still had the range on mats instead of grass.

Lake Presidential (about 35 min away) is a good layout.  They used to host US Open local qualifiers there, but I haven't played it in a few years, so I'm not sure about the current conditioning.

If you're willing to drive up to an hour, that opens up more options.

Laurel Hill is going to be the best-quality public course around, but it's still going to be 25 mins drive from Old Town area. Greendale golf course is the closest public course (10 mins south of Old Town) and it's fine for a muni but there are basically no practice facilities there so no range time before your round. Also, Fort Belvoir has a course (20 mins south of Old Town) but you can only enter the base through one specific gate and you may or may not have to make arrangements ahead of time to get in the gate. I played Andrews AFB (30 mins east of Old Town in Maryland) course a couple of years ago and we had to stop in the guard shack for a quick background check but it still took 30 mins once inside the gate.

Nothing very close to Alexandria.  You’ll have to drive 30-60 minutes to find good public golf.

Higher quality:

In Virginia, consider Laurel Hills (previously mentioned) and Westfields. Further out is Raspberry Falls in Leesburg and Bull Run in Manassas.

The Frederick MD area is blessed with good courses.  My favorite is Worthington Manor,  Whiskey Creek nearby is also very good.  Maryland National and Musket Ridge are also nice, but a little farther away

Good quality, less expensive:

Virginia: Twin Lakes in Fairfax.  Herndon Centennial in Herndon. Algonkian in Sterling. Brambleton in Brambleton

Maryland: Clustered Spires in Frederick.  Richland in Middletown.
