Milled Insert vs. Full Milled face

Considering a switch to milled putter. I've seen some with milled inserts and some with full milled face.

 

What are advantages and disadvantages for those who have played both?

 

I feel like players who loved a milled putter, love the feel and a milled insert make take some of the feel away?

 

Does a milled insert give you a smaller sweet spot?

 

Does a milled insert allow companies to distribute weight in other placed for more forgiveness?

Just gives a different feel for the most part. If there is a MOI change it would be miniscule despite what a brand may say.

Putters, like any other club, are the sum of their parts so it is impossible to say X factor equals X feel. I have played fully milled putters that are soft, hard, clicky, quiet... same with inserts; played some that are marshmallow soft, hard, etc... This is the reason it is important to try and actually test drive clubs and be open minded while doing so. Unfortunately with so many variables in place, there is no definitive answer. Kind of reminds me of when people get set on a certain flex without realizing there is no industry standard for shaft flex so it's better to find something that works for you vs being worried about the minutiae.

Agree with the above.. inserts themselves can produce any feel as well as some fully milled putters varying in feel also. Really need to try them where possible to see what you like.

Deep milling vs shallow milling, ProV1 vs ProV1x, grip type are just a few things that can give the same putter different feels, regardless of insert or not.  I would strongly recommend testing putters with your ball of choice.

There are so many variables at play it's going to be down to personal choice. Generally it's going to be a more expensive material inserted into a less expensive one. They may also have a softer material inserted or have some kind of dampening material.

 

MOI differences will be negligible. Tech shouldn't be an issue as they can mill tech into heads as well as inserts.

it’s about combining the desired performances of different metals to get the best of both worlds 

 

building a putter out of copper would be incredibly expensive and would dent and ding very quickly. Using a stronger metal with a copper insert gives you the feel of copper on the putter face with the strength of steel or stainless for the main body of the putter.
