Low Shallow wedge shots

Recommended Posts

A shot i really struggle with.

Does anyone have anyone setup go to`s or swing feels for achieving that low driven high spinning wedge shot?

i have tried dan grieves method of stance dictating distance and releasing early but the bad shots are always high digging floaty shots that are useless

Ball in the middle of your stance.  Press your hand forward just slightly, so the club face opens to the target just a hair.  Rotate the face open going back with a 3/4 backswing, square the face coming down but don't let the toe roll over. Should produce a small push draw with a lower trajectory.

FWIW, my normal wedge technique if/when I do it correctly does flight the ball down and spin it a lot even with "full" swings (not really full but as full as I'll ever swing a wedge). And if I am hitting it 3/4 or so it will bring it down lower to something like what you're talking about. Pretty much needs a urethane ball and a wedge with fresh grooves to do it well.

I have no idea how to do the extreme version I see some good players use, where the ball is maybe 1/3 of their normal iron shot height and sucks back a bit when it lands.

My normal technique is just ball back, clubface slightly open, front foot dragged back several inches and (the key part) I try to come into impact really shallow and definitely 100% do NOT cut across the ball. Almost like hitting a draw from an open stance type thing.

Spin mostly comes from friction which comes from good contact. For the high spinning  low trajectory pitch shot you want a steep angle of attack, but with shallow turf interaction:

It’s easiest to do this with the hands higher at setup and the heel of the club elevated off the ground.

You mentioned releasing early, and that’s good for this type of shot but make sure you’re not trying to stay down and through the shot with your head and upper body.

Would this work for 50-100 yards?

I play the ball back about 1 ball from the normal spot, then it's just 10 to 10 swing with a lower follow through.  The key IMO is to swing hard and make clean contact.  A lot of time I see guys hitting this shot and they think wedge/swing easy, which results in deceleration and not clean contact.

Thanks for the input so far, i should`ve elaborated more in my original post.

the shot i am talking about is the inbetween shot from 50-120 yards where its not a pitch but also not a full swing. The good players that i see and have played with drive these in low and screaming with spin.

i will upload a couple of videos of my own shots to help

I try to hit this type of shot with all of my half or three quarter wedge swings. I keep the wedge face square to target, ball slightly back of middle, and feel a "wide arc" "No wrist activation" swing - which usually leads to low trajectory shot that general will hop a few times then stop. I can try to add a video if you would like next time I practice these at the range.

Need to learn how to launch at 30* +-5*

can buy this or use alignment sticks and duct tap    Formula for 30* is

Height = distance * .58

The technique is the same regardless of the yardage - you need to learn to hit the shot first, then you can worry about figuring out distance control with various swings once you have it down.  One thing to add to my previous post - you want to come in more shallow than a normal wedge shot, hitting down makes the ball go up.

Take your lowest lofted wedge, open a touch, give it a draw swing, and work on exiting low left. If you set up with the wedge too square, you wont get the ball touching enough grooves.

I don't think this type of shot is good short or long. Ideally you would use it between 20-40 yards from the target. They key is to let the face turn down. That squares the face, keeps it low, and adds a touch more speed. Also, like a sand shot, you need to keep your swing speed up through the ball. Spin comes from the face grabbing and speed.

I don't like this shot. I can do it, but its very low percentage for me.
