20 Handicap - T200’s

Long time lurker!

I’ve been stepping up my game for the past year. Lessons are non stop, and we are finally making progress! Feels fantastic.

I swung a buddy’s T200 8 iron the other day and really enjoyed how it felt. I currently game Mizuno 919 Hot Metals, and they are pretty good for me still.

Just curious though. Do higher handicap players play the T200’s? Is it a severe punishment with lack of forgiveness and head size in your opinions?

Thanks!

I fit the description of higher hcp playing T200's (2021) 6-GW. I could use more forgiveness with the 6 and 7 irons, but, the 8-GW are fine.  You should try your buddy's mid irons to see how you hit them, before making a decision.

Will do. Thanks for the info. I also play to a 5 iron and use hybrid after that.

20hc could definitely play T200's if you're a good ball striker, and the shafts are right for you.

I have "3" T200 2 irons (last yrs versions) with different composite shafts.  They are fine clubs, and like their look, but wouldn't suggest them for a 20 handi, largely because I don't know how you tackle golf; T300 are more fitting.

A close friend is a 20 handicap and wouldn't recommend them to him.  At your stage, don't buy on looks, or a few whacks using your buddies club.  Honeymoons are always fickle.  Buy on overall design but forgiveness, the latter will keep you playing.

All depends how you strike your irons. Handicap number is equated with too many parts of the game to determine an iron with handicap.

As others have said. It has more to do with your ball striking than your handicap.

If you practice a lot, you shouldn’t have any problems, but if you only hit balls while you are playing once or twice a month, it’s probably best to look for something more forgiving like your HotMetals.

What does 20HCP tells us about your game? Do you strike your irons all over the face and hosel as well? Go for another bigger head version… but do you find the center of the clubface quite often, go for it, the T200 are superb irons.

if you play your irons well but your putter not, you are maybe above 20 HCP and still a good ballstriker.

I would say that my irons are absolutely my biggest struggle at the moment. Just wanted to hear everyone’s thoughts.

but what exactly is the problem? if you find the middle of the clubface but have no face control at all, there is no forgiving SGI head that can help you out. if you hit thin and fat shots, it is simply your swing and your balance. most problems are coming from one single main issue, find out what it is before you shop out for new clubs.

I’m not really looking to get new clubs, but I did swing his and wondered if higher handicap players played these. That’s all.

To put it into perspective, the T200 is a lot more forgiving that what higher handicappers had to choose from 20 years ago.  We were looking at Tommy Armour 845 and stuff like that which would probably not be as forgiving as a lot of the "scratch player" CB irons today.  I don't know if all that means anything, but I find it interesting.  Because to me it means, yes, you could play the T200 without suffering much.

That said, I'm on the side that says more forgiveness is virtually always a good thing, especially for someone with the game you described.  So Titleist T300 or T350 > T200.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
