Iron club selection & fitting help

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently decided to take golf a bit more serious. Bought clubs all second hand, was really ignorant to regards of lie angle, shaft flex and so on.

I’m 6ft4 and swing pretty fast but before I was just using regular flex magregor irons and new nothing different.

Got a few lessons from a PGA pro and he told me I should be using x stiff irons so I sold the stuff srixons I had bought and I purchased a combo set of 4-5 Callaway Apex Pro 19, 6-PW Callaway Apex MB 18. Shaft KBS C-Taper 130x.

Got MG3 wedges with s400 shafts and I fell in love with them straight away but the irons are always going left.

When I bought the irons the guy said everything is standard, lie and length but when I went to get a fitting which was expensive the guy said my irons were 1/2 an inch long. He said they were fine for me.

Then I went to a Callaway driver fitting and the rep said near the end that they were 1 degree up according to the green paint fill. But I didn’t have enough time for anything else.

So I have a Stealth Plus 3 wood with hzrdus smoke blue x stiff shaft that I love. I have a P790 udi 2 iron with a hzrdus smoke black x stiff shaft that goes left like the irons. Driver is currently ordered from Callaway and the wedges I love.

Would 1 degree upright cause a ball to deviate 15/16 ft to the left?

I have a budget of €1500 left aside for clubs but I don’t know what to do. Go get another fitting and ask for lie checks which was never done on me or keep the money but it’s turning me off when everyone gives me conflicting information.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Shane

We are not in the right section but here are some thoughts…
There are so many variables that it is tough to give online advise regarding fitting.  I’m not someone who always th8ngs a fitting is necessary but in your situation it probably would be a good idea.  You don’t need to buy the clubs from the same place you do the fitting, and usually can save a good amount of money ordering elsewhere to the same specs given at fitting.  While the apex mb are great clubs, they are also very demanding.  Depending on where your game is, and what you want from it, they may not be the best choice.  If you decide that you like them you can simply have the lie adjusted. That is what I would do first as for $50 or so you can find out if that is the problem or if it’s just a swing flaw with your irons.
you can check the lie angle yourself easily enough, with no special equipment.  Draw a line on the ball with a sharpie and place it vertical/up and down.  Hit the ball and see what the line looks like on your ball.  If it is straight up and down then lie angle is good.  There are charts online that will give you static measurements for length of clubs.  Usually they use wrist to floor measurement and will give you a starting point, but there are a lot of variables, which is why at your height you may be better off getting a fit. +1/2” is probably close but hard to say.  Many tall people also find that an upright lie angle is preferable but there are plenty of exceptions.
as for an upright lie angle making the ball go left, it definitely can.  The heel can contact ground first and shut the face.  Wether that is the issue you are having is anyones guess…

Good luck!
