Ouch! Lower back pain and 'good posture'

The “ neutral spine” is the position of the spine in which injuries are minimized and movement is maximized .

The “neutral spine “ means that the 3 NATURAL curvatures of the spine are present and aligned . Just goto YouTube and you will see numerous examples of the “ neutral  spine “. 

The 3 natural curves of the spine . 

LORDOSIS-inward curving at the lumbar ( lower) spine 

KYPHOSIS - outward curving at the thoracic ( middle ) spine 

LORDOSIS -inward curving at the cervical ( neck) spine 

Because of the weight of the head of the golf club the amount of Kyphosis at the thoracic spine for golfers  will be slightly exaggerated from that of the ideal “ neutral spine”. 
A flat back lacking the natural curvatures of the spine is an an example of a deviation from the “ neutral spine . Young golfers may setup with their spine flat , but they are asking for future problems . So is too much inward curvature at the lumbar spine( refer to Will Zalatoris ) . So is too much kyphosis in the thoracic spine , which is guaranteed to reduce rotation . 

Due to our general lack of physical conditioning  and our tendency to slouch exacerbated by sitting at desks , it is common to develop poor spinal posture that deviates  from the desired position of “ the neutral spine “. 
Since back problems are pandemic among golfers of all levels , it is vital to adopt a program of back and core conditioning that will allow you to adopt a “ neutral spine” . Just trying to adopt a “ neutral spine” position when  taking your golf stance is doomed to failure if done in isolating without such an exercise program . 
Golfers must understand that the facet joints ( joints between the bones of the spine  )are aligned at different angles to one another depending on their location in the spine. While the alignment of the facet joints in the lumbar( lower)  spine permit significant amounts of  lateral flexion and extension , they allow for very limited amount of rotation . Trying to rotate the lumbar spine is a source of injuries because of this, 

while rotation at the  thoracic ( middle) spine is much greater because the facet joints of the thoracic spine are aligned differently .
