Broomhandle Putting

Hi all, 

 

Now that Lucas Glover has made Broomhandle putting cool again... (Also Si Woo Kim, An Byeong-hun, Danny Lee, Aaron Wise, Bernard, Adam Scott, Scott McCarron etc)

 

I was wondering if we could start a thread on Broomhandle putting. I am specifically interested in the optimal putting techniques, grips, release patterns and stroke mechanics. I currently use a Ping B90 and looking to move to a LAB Mezz. It is a real struggle to find any quality information online on this so hoping the forum could help me delve a little deeper.

 

Currently, I set up with a "normal" left hand, thumb covering the grip cap. Then I have been dabbling with a normal finger down the shaft right hand or "the saw" grip. I set up anchored as this is a great way to get consistent setup and then I move the butt away from my chest to stroke. Again, I get variable roll depending on how far away I push the butt of the club. Assuming this is affecting the arc and effective lie angle at impact.

 

I have tried to hold the left hand firm as an "anchor" point away from the chest and just push with right hand, but seem to have better results rocking the shoulders with the split hand grip... 

 

Hoping for loads of others to share! I have a bad back, so not able to go back to short putting!

If you look up "cool" in the official Golf dictionary (unabridged, Merriam-Webster edition), you'll find a photo of Adam Scott.

 

I've dabbled with the B90, and I find the rocking the shoulders to be more consistent. Youtube has some good Bernard and Scotty McCarron videos.

Here's a video from Scott McCarron on how to use the broomstick method.  I believe this is the video that Glover used to teach himself.
 

 

 

I know Scott was one of the first adopters of AimPoint and a super high golf IQ guy.

 

I'm thinking of switching to the broomstick.  I used the belly putter to moderate success, had more success with the armlock.  I do think it's just more difficult to not get yippy wihen you get older.  But I also question the effectiveness of the broomstick on slower greens.
