How bout with my ranges

 

Driver 12° (200-240y)

2 Mid-Iron 24° (175y)

Bulldog 31° (trouble club replacement for 4 iron) (150-60y, 130y maybe fully chocked up grip)

6 Iron 40° 

8 Iron 48°

Sander 56°

Putter

 

I could add a spoon at 18° though that makes 8 clubs; I could also replace the 6 and 8 irons with just one 7 at 44° but I thought it's better to have more short irons when closer in. I tried hitting a 15-16 degree spoon but couldn't hit more than about 165y.

I would add a club in the 35* range and a spoon.

A good, but very wide gap coverage to start.  I agree that a good 35, 36 degree mashie would be very useful.  You will find out what gaps you need to fill after playing them a few rounds.  I play with roughly 4 -5 degrees of gap between the clubs in my set, but honestly some clubs never see the light of day.  Keeping it simple like you are currently setting up for is a great way to figure out what your missing.  It will force you to really think and get creative which is really one of the hallmarks in hickory.

I have played a number of  tournaments in the 10ish years I’ve been playing hickory, including five  “majors”. I’ve played pretty well in three of the big events and poorly in one and horrendously in one (hickory will do that to you, in hickory sometimes when it goes bad, it goes really bad). Anyway, the key thing for me was this. The fewer clubs I carried,  the better I played. I started out with eleven and since I didn’t know what I was doing several of those eleven were just awful clubs. Clubs that Bobby Jones would have trouble employing. So I got rid of the unreliable duds and started investing in good authentics (I only play the old stuff). I did have a reproduction driver for awhile, a Tad Moore but I put it aside when I found a terrific authentic brassie that I hit just about as far and far more reliably. I’m digressing here but the point is I now carry eight, all solid players and I have no plans to add to that. If I could find a putter I like better than the one I have I’d do that but that’s the putter thing…we would all do that, lol.
