Shorter wood orders and swing weights

I’m considering ordering a 7 wood next season but wanna go half an inch short. I’ve never ordered clubs short but I’m wondering about the swing weight.

 

if I ordered a Taylormade 7 wood which is normally 41.75 inches and D3 swing weight a half inch short, will it still be D3. I know shortening clubs a half inch will change about 3 SW’s but do Taylormade account for that in customer builds?

If they won't guarantee SW for short clubs that is something that Club Champion can do.  My clubs are about as short as anyone's. -2 inches for irons!  They made me a 41 inch Stealth driver.

Lead tape is your friend.

I ordered a half inch short Stealth 3HL from TM a couple years back.  As @phizzy30 said, I had to add a significant amount of lead tape to get the head feel back, which makes me think that they did not automatically add weight to the head get it back to D3 .  I can't remember though if I requested a specific swingweight on my order, and I've never put it on a scale to get actual swingweight.  I just kept adding lead tape until I felt like I could sense the head throughout the swing. 

 

I do think clubs with an adjustable weight make this process a bit easier/cleaner, which is why I'm moving away from TM in the fairways since I like to play my fairways a good bit shorter than standard as well.

Thanks, I had a feeling that would be the case. I not a big fan of lead tape.

Which model?  If it has a sole weight that is the best way to change the SW by buying a new weight via Ebay.

No sole weight then hot melt or lead tape.

Probably the Qi10 replacement for the stealth 2 which doesn’t have the weight. I don’t think there would be an option for the built in weight. Might just go standard length to save the hassle. I don’t even know what swing weight I like tbh but just assume the standard sw is the way to go.

if there is no sole weight then TM has no ability to adjust the SW.  For the models that do have sole weights, I believe when you select a different length the sole weight noted as standard will get changed, at least it does for the drivers.

So, this is probably going to get a bunch of hate, but remember don't shoot the messenger. I have a lot of friends in the golf industry, and have heard that TaylorMade is one of the worst for orders like this. They say they can do it, but if you actually check the club when it arrives, often times, it isn't right. 

 

With that being said, I would say try it, and if it arrives incorrect just don't be surprised, and fix it. If it has a sole weight, pull it out, weigh it, and order a replacement. If it doesn't, try to find someone who will hot melt it. 

 

These issues are actually really common nowadays. Manufacturers don't want to do these specialty orders. They love to push "get custom fit" but hate custom orders. I ran into a similar issue when I was planning on getting rtx6s last winter/spring. They refuse to build to a swing weight. It's super frustrating.

 

Last thing I will say is if you really have your heart set of a certain list of specs, and want to know it's done right, this is pings whole shtick. You can even call them prior and tell them what head, shaft, SW, grip, etc you want, and they'll say whether they can build it or not.

Would depend also on the balance point of the shaft. If it were a tip heavy shaft it shouldn't be that difficult to add the extra weight inside the tip.  Just tell them the Swing weight you want!

Thanks, yeah I don’t have a lot of faith in the custom order process. Ping would be handy since I already have ping g400 3 and 5 wood (3 wood now sidelined and 5 wood lofted down to play as a 4 wood). I do quite like taylormade woods though. Something about the way they sit that I like more than other brands.

at this moment tm isnt adjusting for swingweight in custom orders...but should be available in the near future.
