WAGR Power Estimator

I asked the R&A for details on how the WAGR power calculation is set. After all, I read the following statements on their website:

 

"The World Amateur Golf Ranking is produced primarily as a service to golf."

 

"For the highest ranked players, those generally ranked around 400 or better, care might be taken in selecting events in which to participate, as the maximum points on offer to the winner in weaker events may not meet their current average."
 

It seems like you need to have a good sense of the Power rankings heading into the event, especially if you’re deciding between competing events. 
 

In any case, the R&A was reluctant to give me any details, citing it was part of their “intellectual property”

 

So I reverse engineered it. 
 

Behold the WAGR Power Estimator. Very accurate as long as you have players outside the top 200. It will overstate the estimate when top 200 players are involved. 
 

Feel free to make a copy to your Google Drive and hopefully it helps you navigate the Amateur landscape down the road. 

 

I will crack the Top 200 piece and also add the sliding scale for points per finish position down the road.
