Louisville Golf 50's Classic Irons Question

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I am looking for details about this set of irons I just picked up for super cheap. I have only been able to find one review page about them and it didn't offer much in the way of info: http://www.golfreview.com/product/golf-clubs/irons/louisville/classic-50s.html

They look, to me, like they may be mid/late 90s early 00s possibly forged in the USA (just a wild guess). The shape and feel reminds me of Mizuno MP-14.

Anyway, please let me know if you have any info on these. I'm really enjoying them and would love to learn more about them. Thanks!

I bet they are nice irons. I picked up a set of NOS LG heads last year from an old timer who was getting rid of all of his stuff. I didn't need any more irons, but he was so happy to find a kindred spirit, he gave me everything he had left.

They are great looking heads and look like great players. I'll shaft them up and play them someday, but for now, they are sitting in a very long queue of projects needing to be done.

I was surprised at how nice they are. They have quite a bit of offset, but that doesn't bother me. They feel softer than my Titleist 681 irons, too. I'll definitely be gaming them a lot this year.

Those date back to the early to mid 80's. Sold by LG as component heads to custom clubmakers. Along with the available matching woods they were considered about as good as anything at the time. The 50's theme was their version of the remakes being sold by major manufacturers like Macgregor. Forged in the USA by the Hoffman foundry I believe but I could be wrong.

My guess is that the classic set they aimed to reproduce was the original Hogan Precision irons or possibly the perfection of perfection that was the '59 Hogan Starburst or Sabre irons which followed the Precisions.

Mizuno MP14 clearly took their inspiration from the Precision irons which Tiger Woods then carried into his Nike and then Taylormade equipment contracts.

If my theory is right, the LG 50's include some poetic license in the detail to make them a little more user friendly in terms of leading edge, bounce etc but a very nice looking set of irons.

Thanks for the knowledge! I guess I was way off. I have hit a few 80s irons and these look and feel more like the 90s to me, but I don't know nearly as much as you guys. I haven't heard back from Louisville Golf yet but if I do, I'll be sure to post about it here. Thanks again!

These 50s Classics are surprisingly REALLY nice. They might have seen 5 rounds of play, if that- there's very little bag chatter and almost no wear on the face. I got them for thrift store prices and they came with nice Rifle 6.0 shafts and fresh Lamkin grips. I took them home and hit balls in my simulator (Mevo+) and the gapping is spot on for traditional lofts. They're probably a bit upright because my misses were left, but I don't mind that at all. I play older irons (962b, 681) and these are just as good, if not better. I'm stoked!
