Launch Monitor Parameters Impacting Driver Spin

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking a lot about how to reduce and make consistent driver spin windows.

I initially thought it was all about increasing AOA but as of recently seeing some swings with relatively lower AOA and lower spin and relatively higher AOAs with higher spin.

I am back to thinking it is perhaps more about centeredness of contact to keep spin in a good low window, and AOA is less of a factor.

Any thoughts?

Contact location in a big factor in spin rate, spin loft (presented loft at impact - Angle of attack) is the other.

Many struggle to present the same loft while increasing AoA, so someone who just decides to increase AoA is, very likely, offsetting that gain of +X degrees by adding that much, or more loft at impact. Separating those two variables is finer work. Someone hitting flat at the ball presenting 10 degrees of loft will spin it less than the player hitting 5 up but with 18 degrees of loft at impact, using a 6 degree driver just makes my brain want to open the face more to see loft, anecdotal experience tells me I'm not alone in this.

The same reason the phrase "hot pull" exists, when a player relies on a slightly open (to path) face at impact and a positive angle of attack, a square or slightly closed to path face at impact results in higher ball speed and lower spin (given good/similar contact,) ball go far, ball not go where wanted.

All that matters is spin loft (dynamic loft minus AoA*), clubhead speed, face to path angle, and impact location on the face.

When the first three go up, spin goes up. Impact slightly above center takes spin off, and below center adds spin.

*Technically, TrackMan’s spin loft number is based on 3 dimensions, taking into account the face to path angle as well.

Changing your aoa on purpose to change spin is a good way to ruin your swing.

Improve your swing and how solid you hit it and numbers magically line up.

The numbers show an issue and show objective improvement.  You don’t chase a number

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Howard Jones has numerous posts and threads explaining spin and launch based on contact point on the face.

By far the most important thing is centered contact. If you have a good swing and make centered to slightly above centered contact you will have good driver LM numbers.

So many folks chasing big positive AoAs hitting ball off bottom of face, reducing ball speed, lowering launch and increasing spin. Can hit down on driver and get plenty good launch stats.

Just remove SPIN LOFT as a parameter for spin, its only valid in a theoretical model where impact is 100% the same, so when we enter reality, we will notice that Spin loft is just as useless as AOA is as a spin parameter.

We only need ONE example.
if we CANT see that spin loft change spin....then it does not.
Numbers is with RORY as player.

Analyze and breakdown of the numbers above
Its not even a trend or system to it, values is all over the charts.....
Conclusion is, we can forget spin loft, just pay attention to actual impact position and dynamic loft, that's what really matters.
