What are your stat benchmarks?

Recommended Posts

Tons of data out there now with Arco's and others to understand key stats "by handicap".  For example, depending on source the data shows a "scratch golfer" hits 51% fairways, 56% GIR, 57% scrambling, etc. https://www.golfmonthly.com/features/the-stats-behind-a-scratch-golfer.      However, does that translate any different to a junior golfer?   I also understand not all scratch golfers are built the same.

I've kept pretty good stats watching my 13 Year Old play over the last year (tmnt only) and trying to understand what areas are ripe for the most improvement.

"Scratch golfer" stats ( according to article link above )  vs. His average over last year. (Shot Variance):

1.) Fairways - 51% / 58%

2.) GIR - 56% / 53%

3.) Up & Down - 57% / 56%

4.) 3 Putts/Round - 1.3 / 1.6

5.)  Birdies - 2.2 / 1.8 ( -1/2 Stroke)

6.) Bogeys - 4.6 / 5.4( -.8 Stroke)

7.) Double Bogeys    .7  / 1 (  - .3 Stroke)

He is generally in the ballpark on most of these key stats for "Scratch" , so hard to ID any low hanging fruit (puzzling side note, he is in range  in all categories, but his index is 4.4 ??).

Curious what benchmarks you use to help ID where to focus game improvement?  What benchmarks for putting ( SGP, feet made, # putts)?

We use PGA tour average, ie the same strokes gained benchmark used in the tour numbers. Obviously junior courses are not as penal so there’s an inherent benefit there. But it works for us.

More recently I’ve use the average of a PGA tour player ranked in the top 20 overall as a stretch goal in each metric.

For reference, my son’s stat tracking and history can be found here. Feel free to copy and use if you find it useful.

Intersting. thanks for sharing.  So where does the inputs go in?

1) Fairways don't matter as long as you aren't taking a penalty stroke.

2) GIR need to hit 12-14. Typical Junior is 8-10.

3) Up & Down need to be over 50%. Up and down is more about where you miss rather.

4) 3 Putts a round. Every one 3 putts. Move on and don't worry about it. Ideally would like to be less than 1 a round. More than 2 and it is a problem.

5) Birdies need to be 3-5 a round.

6) Bogeys really don't keep the stat. Nothing can be read into it.

7) Double Bogeys again don't keep the stat. Nothing can be read into it.

Most important stats are

1 putts per round. 7 is where the player wants to be to maintain an E or better round.

Penalty strokes per round.

Same question for me—how do you gather the inputs for this spreadsheet and where are they inserted to generate the information? Also, can you get historical information from JGS or have you tracked it yourself?

Golftec suggests the following tracking metrics (which can be compared against any target handicap):

# GIR

# Near Green (within 20 yards of green)

Scramble (Up/Down% of NGIR chances)

# Bad Drives (those that result in either a penalty or put you in a spot where you cant advance it more than 100 yds)

# Bad 3 Putts (3 putts within 30 feet)

I find this a reasonable set for the average bear that uses only paper and pencil.

Has anyone found an app that they would recommend when it comes to golf stat keeping? There are several out there, so I'm wondering if anyone has found one that has a good user interface and which makes it easy to input the data. I believe there is one out there where you can pull up a map of the course and just click where each shot lands, but I don't recall the name of that app.

Not sure the age of your junior but we started with GolfPad. It is so robust & simple. We've actually also started using it this season with his high school team. It's been eye opening for some of his newer teammates.

https://golfpadgps.com/

My son (now 14) has used GolfPad since early 2017. We've used Arccos, Shot Scope, and others during that same time but we've always run GolfPad in conjunction. I just checked and he has 385(!!) rounds saved in GolfPad. They've done a LOT in the past year & the roadmap currently has a lot being added.

His favorite features are actually the game tracking they have in there. Cuts & Snips (points for hitting FIR, GIR, saves and more) is a favorite. You can set your own point values if you are really trying to drive home a point about a particular thing. He likes that it makes your round about more than the actual score and it can also keep him more focused in our high school practices since he's rarely, if ever, going to be beat.

You can also track where your shot finished/club used / etc and get a darn good rough estimate of what is going on with your clubs.

As a parent my favorite feature, now that he's going out way more often on his own, is the Live Sharing. He'll go to start his round & clicks on the "Live Sharing" feature and he can pick whomever to send a text message link to the round. As he enters his scores it updates the online scorecard. (It will do this shot by shot it he's using club tracking) We often use this feature for friends & family who want to keep up with him during tournaments. I just start the round on my phone & enter scores as we move along.

There is a free version, you'll get premium features for 30-days and then you can always upgrade t any point for like $30 year. They usually do discounts during the majors & Father's day.

ETA: His coach does have him using a much more detailed program now as well. Unless your coach is asking / directing I personally wouldn't worry about that level of data. Don't get me wrong, it's also good stuff but it's overload if you don't have a plan on what to do with it. We clearly run the systems concurrently and it's great. My son just said GolfPad is like the record book of all his golf, not just stats.
